Reuters on Wednesday reported that Apple?s Tim Cook met with Beats CEO Jimmy Lovine about a potential music-streaming partnership. The two allegedly got together last month in Los Angeles to discuss Beats? upcoming Project Daisy, which is yet another subscription-based service promising to change the industry.
Also in attendance was Apple?s Eddy Cue, who played a big hand in developing the iTunes Music Store. Discussions were apparently over Daisy?s overall business model and rollout scenarios, sources told Reuters. However, specifics of a deal, if there even is one in the making, weren?t shared. If anything, the meeting was merely an ?informational? one, Reuters said. Whether there will be future talks remains to be seen.
There?s been talk about Apple launching a streaming service of its own, but nothing has been made official so far. The Cupertino company currently runs the largest online music emporium, so a complementary streaming service certainly makes sense. Still, no concrete evidence confirms such a service is inbound. Should an Apple streaming music service come to fruition, it would compete with Spotify, Rdio and even Google?s rumored subscription music offering.
Beats? Project Daisy is still in the early days, and a lot is still unknown about the project, but it obviously grabbed Apple?s attention. It seems like a very unlikely partnership if something were to materialize, but who knows. Project Daisy is expected to launch at the end of this year.

SLATER, Mo. ? Growing up on the family farm, Anthony Eddy learned early on not to get too attached to animals, including household pets.
His devoted customers are a different story. Pet lovers across the country count on the Saline County taxidermist to faithfully preserve Brutus, Fluffy and other beloved companions for posterity. Even if it means shelling out thousands of dollars and waiting more than a year for the pets' return.
?They're very distraught, because their child has died. For most people, this animal is their life,? said Lessie ?Les? Thurman Calvert, Eddy's office manager. ?Some are kind of eccentric. But most of them are just like you and me. They don't want to bury or cremate them. They can't stand the thought ? It helps them feel better about the loss.?
The front showroom of Eddy's Wildlife Studio in downtown Slater is a testament to pet owners' perseverance. Lifelike dogs and cats of all sizes are scattered along the floor, from a perky-looking Brittany spaniel to a regal Persian cat, a lone iguana and the stray cockatiel or two. Departed pets of all persuasions spend up to one year in hulking, freeze-dry metal drums before they are painstakingly preserved and returned to their owners.
Eddy said his business is one of the few in the country to specialize in pet taxidermy and has a two-month waiting list. A former high school chemistry and biology teacher, hog farmer and Air Force veteran, Eddy started out in traditional taxidermy, stuffing great horned owls and pheasants with the help of a local veterinarian. He originally used the freeze-dry technique to preserve mounted turkey heads for hunters before realizing in the mid-1990s it could also work with pets.
Eddy, 64, compares his line of work to the mortician's trade ? he'll share broad details about the process with customers, but likes to keep some mystery to the process and steer clear of the gross-out factor. He's quick to embrace the artistry of his craft, especially when it comes to the primping and prepping required once the internal organs and body fat are removed and the carcass is fully dry. Depending on the customer's preference, pets can be posed with a skyward gaze, an extended paw or with eyes closed, seemingly asleep.
?You just have a knack for it,? he said. ?It's like an artist painting a picture.?
The degree of difficulty ? and the scrutiny of demanding pet owners who can immediately detect flaws or imperfections in their loved ones ? keep many traditional taxidermists from the domestic animal sector, said Steve Wolk, president of the National Taxidermists Association.
?No matter how perfect your pet comes out, there can still be something wrong,? said Festus, who owns Little Creek Taxidermy in Festus. ?When you go deer hunting, you don't know what that deer looks like. Everybody knows exactly what their pets look like.?
Debbie Rosa, a 59-year-old teacher who splits her time between southern Maine and Port Charlotte, Fla., had her 17-year-old fox terrier Lexi preserved by Eddy when the dog died just before Christmas 2005. She said the choice was an easy one.
?I could stare at an urn, or I could stare at the ground in the cemetery, or I could hold and pet her,? Rosa said. ?Her spirit is in heaven, but her body is here on Earth.?
Eddy and Calvert estimate they receive two to three pets each week, every week. The studio charges $850 for pets under 10 pounds and another $40 per additional pound.
Allen McConnell, a psychology professor at Miami University in Ohio who studies pet owners' behavior, said those who opt for animal preservation can be motivated by grief, a need for belonging and anthropomorphism ? the act of ascribing human attributes to animals or even inanimate objects.
?It's very common for people to memorialize important members of their family,? he said. ?We often visit relatives in family gravesites on birthdays. ? It's part of an extended connection that people have.?
Eddy said he is no longer surprised by unusual requests from customers. It seems that as long as humans embrace animals as four-legged friends, those bonds will continue past the pet's expiration date.
?It runs the whole gamut,? he said, mentioning turtles, guinea pigs, snakes and more. ?If you've got a pet of some kind, somebody's going to want you to preserve it.?

Recently we posted a set of Uzi pictures that a reader sent us. The reader bought the weapon at a gun show, and as far as we know followed all state and federal laws.
The response from other readers was explosive. At least one commenter claimed he was writing the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, and Firearms to complain.
Well, we have now heard from the gun-buyer again.
He says his IP address is now blocked from visiting gun and ammunition websites from his phone and home computers.
He has had no visits by law enforcement.
But he thinks the government has found him and is now blocking him.
The government does not centrally control the Internet, so this seems unlikely. But assuming the reader remains unable to access weapons sites, it will be interesting to figure out what is really going on. Most likely, if anyone is "blocking" the reader, it's his Internet Service Provider. (But even that would raise some interesting questions...)
Here's a screenshot from his phone.?

The Plantronics Calisto 620 ($149.95 direct) is a combination Bluetooth wireless and PC speakerphone. Essentially, it turns your computer and phone into a call conferencing system for office or home use. It also has a rechargeable battery; combine that with the Calisto 620's light weight, and you also have a system that travels easily for use in hotel rooms or satellite offices. Unfortunately, while callers sound nice and loud through the Calisto 620's speaker, they can easily tell you're on a speakerphone?and not a very good one at that.
Design, USB Receiver, and Compatibility
The Calisto 620 is made entirely of black plastic. It measures 4.33 by 4.33 by 1.26 inches (HWD) and weighs 7.2 ounces, or slightly more than the average smartphone. On top, oversized plastic buttons handle Mute, Answer/Reject, and Volume adjustments. On the side of the unit below the Plantronics logo is a sliding switch that handles Power and Bluetooth pairing, plus a micro USB port for charging the device or plugging it into your PC.
The package contains the Calisto 620, a zippered cloth carrying pouch, a USB-compatible AC adapter, and a USB-to-microUSB cable. Underneath the 620 is a compartment containing a tiny USB receiver, which you can plug into a PC or Mac for making wireless VoIP calls with Skype and other clients.
For this review, I tested the Calisto 620 with an Apple iPhone 5 and Skype on a dual-core Thinkpad laptop running Windows 7. One note: I'm reviewing the standard Calisto 620 (P620), which is a UC standard model that works with Avaya, Cisco, IBM, Skype, and other clients. There's also a separate P620-M version that's specifically Microsoft-certified and optimized for use with Microsoft Lync 2010 and Microsoft OCS 2007 only. Either way, it's a fully A2DP-compliant device for streaming audio, so you could use it as a mono source for playing background music or listening to podcasts.
Performance and Conclusions
The Calisto 620 includes bi-directional microphones that only activate in the direction of a person's voice, to lower the possibility of extra background noise creeping into the signal on the other end. The Calisto 620 also has what Plantronics calls 360-degree full duplex audio, meaning that it projects sound from callers out into your room, as well as transmitting voices on your side of the call. Finally, Plantronics includes DSP circuitry to smooth over audio dropouts and reduce noise.
The 360-degree speakers work fine in practice; it's easy to hear callers even in noisy rooms, and they sound surprisingly loud and full. Here's the problem: Everyone on the other end will be able to tell you're on a speakerphone. My voice came through reasonably clear and intelligibly, but it sounded computerized and oddly distant, more so even than it does through many cell phone speakerphones.
The built-in battery offers seven hours of continuous talk time, or up to five days of standby, on a single charge. On Plantronics' website, you can download Spokes, a free program that makes controlling calls from multiple sources easier. It also installs a battery meter for the Calisto 620 in your PC's icon tray, and updates your UC presence status whether you're on a mobile call or a PC call.
Overall, the Calisto 620 does what it's supposed to do, but I wish it offered better microphone transmission quality. If you need a portable speaker that works in a conference room, a hotel room, and on your desk, the Calisto 620 is tempting and fine for casual use, but I wouldn't make critical business calls from it.
There's a hole in the market for this sort of product too. There are numerous other battery-powered speakerphones on the market, like the Motorola Roadster 2 or SuperTooth HD, but most of these are designed to be clipped onto a sun visor inside your car, and only work on a desktop or table in a pinch?and none of these models have the 360-degree speakers and microphones the Calisto 620 has. But those are good options for hands-free Bluetooth calls while driving.
