Oxidative stress and altered gene expression occurs in a metabolic liver disease model

ScienceDaily (Oct. 29, 2012) ? A team of researchers under the direction of Dr. Jeffrey Teckman in the Department of Pediatrics at St. Louis University, have demonstrated that oxidative stress occurs in a genetic model of alpha-1-antitrypsin deficiency. This is the most common genetic liver disorder in children and can lead to cirrhosis and hepatocellular carcinoma in adults. Some cases may require liver transplantation.

The report, published in the October 2012 issue of Experimental Biology and Medicine, suggests that treatment with antioxidants might be of therapeutic benefit for some individuals.

"We have evidence of oxidative stress in livers from an animal model that expresses the classical Z variant form of alpha-1-antitrypsin. The animal model recapitulates the human liver disease, in which the livers accumulate polymers of alpha-1-antitrypsin mutant Z protein, developing fibrosis and hepatocellular carcinoma with age," says Dr. Marcus. Potentially, non-invasive treatment involving long-term regulation of antioxidant levels could ameliorate the oxidative stress and retard the advancement of disease.

"This is an exciting new report which may help us understand the extreme variability between different patients with this same, single gene, metabolic liver disease. These findings may inform the pathophysiology of other liver diseases as well," says Dr. Teckman. In clinical studies, liver disease from alpha-1-antitrypsin mutant Z protein has shown considerable variability in severity and progression, suggesting that as yet undescribed genetic modifiers may influence disease development. Based on this study, certain antioxidant enzymes involved in oxidative stress defense could be useful targets for further examination. Using microarray technology, the investigators have identified a number of potential alterations in gene expression pathways that could modify the development of liver pathologies. This information could be useful in defining genetic variants that may influence individual susceptibility and in facilitating the design of appropriate treatments.

Steven R. Goodman, PhD, Editor-in-Chief of Experimental Biology and Medicine said, "Teckman and colleagues have demonstrated that oxidative stress occurs in an animal model of Alpha-1-antitrypsin deficiency. This suggests that antioxidant treatment may be beneficial in this most common genetic liver disorder in children."

DMCA rules it's okay to jailbreak your iPhone, but not your iPad

DMCA rules it's okay to jailbreak your iPhone, but not your iPad

The DMCA (Digital Millenium Copyright Act) has extended the exception that makes it legal to jailbreak your iPhone which will be good news for most of the jailbreak community. It doesn't come without a few hefty caveats though including new rules on unlocking and the fact that tablets, namely the iPad, are not granted the same exception.

The DMCA has recently renewed their exception to make jailbreaking your iPhone legal but it doesn't come without some serious drawbacks this time around. When it comes to unlocking your iPhone, it won't be covered under the exception unless the actual carrier unlocks it for you.

This basically means that any iPhone (or smartphone at all for that matter) that you purchase as of January 2013 will require you to get the carrier's permission in order to unlock it. Software unlocks such as ultrasn0w will be considered illegal. If you've got a smartphone that you've purchased before January 2013, you'll still be covered under the exception but any smartphone purchases made after that date won't receive the benefits of the old exemption.

When it comes to tablets, the DMCA has decided not to grant the same jailbreak exception.

What about tablets? No dice. The Librarian "found significant merit to the opposition?s concerns that this aspect of the proposed class was broad and ill-defined, as a wide range of devices might be considered 'tablets,' notwithstanding the significant distinctions among them in terms of the way they operate, their intended purposes, and the nature of the applications they can accommodate. For example, an e-book reading device might be considered a 'tablet,' as might a handheld video game device or a laptop computer."

The Librarian ruled that "the record lacked a sufficient basis to develop an appropriate definition for the 'tablet' category of devices, a necessary predicate to extending the exemption beyond smartphones."

The exception goes on to talk about laws on DVDs and other types of media such as eBooks as well. If you care to find out everything the exemption, hit the source link below then come back and tell us what you make of it all. Is it fair or do you think the DMCA is out of touch with electronic rights in our day and age?

Obama zings Trump on 'Tonight Show'

By Natalie Finn, E! Online

Apparently President Barack Obama did hear about Donald Trump's huuuge announcement.?"This all dates back to when we were growing up together in Kenya," Obama joked Wednesday on "The Tonight Show," when Jay Leno -- comparing the situation to himself and David Letterman -- asked about Trump, who earlier today offered to donate $5 million to charity in exchange for a look at the president's college and passport records.

"We had constant run-ins on the soccer field," Obama continued as Leno mimed notching a point down for the commander-in-chief.

Clint Eastwood stars in a new, chair-free Romney campaign ad

"He wasn't very good and resented it. When we finally moved to America, I thought it would be over."

And, as it turns out, the two have never even met.

Speaking of the first lady, check out some of Michelle Obama's most fashionable moments

Leno also quizzed Obama about his much-criticized performance in his first debate against Mitt Romney.

Obama's performance in the third presidential debate made Lindsay Lohan "proud"

"The truth is, this is not a natural way of communicating," Obama explained. "You don't sit next to somebody and have an extended argument with them like that.... With Michelle, I just concede every point. That's why we celebrated our 20th anniversary."

"There are worse things that can happen than forgetting to give your wife a gift," he cracked.

But when discussing his plan to vote early when he visits Illinois on his "48-hour campaign marathon extravaganza" this week, it didn't sound like he's too far in the dog house with the first lady, noting, "Michelle told me she voted for me."

See how the stars reacted to the final presidential debate

And, good news for trick-or-treaters on Pennsylvania Avenue who may have received fruit last year at the behest of Michelle Obama:?"It is an election year, so candy for everybody," Obama announced. "If anybody comes from Ohio to the White House, they will get a Hershey bar about this big," he added, holding his hands far apart.

Finally, the president was asked by a fan who submitted a question via Facebook if there was a cure for Romnesia.

"Obamacare covers preexisting conditions," he said.

Even Fisker is attending SEMA with some custom Karmas

FISKER AUTOMOTIVE HEADS TO SEMA WITH NEW AFTERMARKET PARTNERS

Four "paint jobs" in four days

ANAHEIM, CA ? October 22, 2012: Fisker Automotive, the leading manufacturer of luxury Electric Vehicles with extended-range (EVer?), has established new partnerships with global aftermarket suppliers to give owners more ways to maximize, personalize and protect their award-winning Karma sedans.

Several examples of the Karma ? Top Gear's Luxury Car of the Year -- will be on display during the SEMA Show at the Las Vegas Convention Center October 30 through November 2, 2012.

Fisker and 3M
Fisker Automotive (www.fiskerautomotive.com) has partnered with the 110-year-old global innovation company 3M to develop and supply its Fisker Diamond Protection Film.

Fisker Diamond Protection Film is a durable, virtually invisible paint protection film that helps maintain the Karma's dramatic design aesthetic and resale value by preventing rock chips and damage from other road debris. It is backed by a five-year warranty when installed by an authorized 3M technician at any of Fisker's retail locations around the world.

To highlight the partnership, Fisker designers worked with 3M Commercial Graphics and their Scotchprint? Wrap Film Series 1080 to develop four wrap schemes for a Karma that will be on display at the 3M display (North Hall Booth 12227).

SEMA attendees will have the opportunity to watch as this Karma gets "painted" in a new scheme every 24 hours.

Gloss Burnt Orange and Brushed Black Metallic "October Sun" commemorates the fall season; Matte White and Gloss Blue Metallic racing stripes of the "Riverside" package are a nod to American racing heritage; "Classic" Hot Rod Red red with a bold, Brushed Aluminum-trimmed Gloss Black stripe honors the great American custom car scene; and the Satin Black and Gloss Burnt Orange of the "Onward." package reflects Fisker's new brand look and feel.

This Karma will also have 3M's Crystalline Automotive Film applied to its windows. Crystalline Automotive Film is a clear, multilayer optical film that cuts interior temperatures, thus reducing energy use by lowering the amount of power needed to cool the passenger compartment.

Images of each wrap are available on Fisker's digital press room at www.media.fiskerautomotive.com

Fisker and Mobil 1, the world's leading synthetic motor oil brand
Fisker has chosen Mobil 1 0W-30 Advanced Fuel Economy? fully synthetic motor oil for the two-liter gasoline engine that powers the Karma EVer's range-extending generator.

Mobil 1 Advanced Fuel Economy fully synthetic motor oils are engineered to deliver outstanding engine protection and provide improved fuel economy, further increasing the Karma's industry-leading economy.

Because most driving can be done using just the Karma's lithium-ion battery, the engine may go long periods between running. Mobil 1's resistance to aging ensures the oil will last longer and provide excellent overall lubrication and wear protection over time.

Fisker's in-house design team personalized the Mobil 1 Fisker Karma ? called "American Icon" -- with Gloss Sterling Silver and Matte Blue Metallic striped graphics from 3M Commercial Graphics.

Attendees can see it at the DUB Arena outside the South Hall of the Las Vegas Convention Center.

Fisker and Goodrich Technology
One of the most impactful design elements of the Fisker Karma are the standard 22-inch 'Circuit Blade' wheels. With their five spoke inserts painted by hand, these aluminum monsters set the Karma apart and reflect its advanced technology powertrain. They are currently the only factory wheel option.

Designers at Fisker know that dollar for dollar wheels are the single best way to personalize a car. They also know sometimes that personalization comes in the form of a different finish, rather than a completely new design.

Traditional chrome plating is popular, but very harsh on the environment. As an environmentally conscious brand, Fisker looked to the Goodrich Technology Corporation and its patented PermaStar? chroming process to start expanding its wheel finish offerings.

PermaStar? uses no hazardous materials and produces no hazardous waste. It combines powder coating and vacuum metallization together to produce a true classic chrome finish with a deep rich appearance equal to traditional triple plate or show quality chrome.

SEMA attendees can see the Fisker-designed wheels featuring the PermaStar? finish on both the Mobil 1 and 3M Karmas throughout the show.

Free Of Charge Domain Name And Website Hosting ? Most Useful ...

This concern grew to become just about rhetorical. Now the cheap internet hosting to the tiny undertaking charges about 5-6 pounds per month. As a consequence homeowners of the source have a chance make use of all current systems, which includes php, mysql databases and lots of other issues. Nonetheless, a huge number of webpages keep going to make use of a 100 % free internet hosting, inspite of its obvious flaws and restrictions. Quite possibly, there are many deep waters during this problem? Or we don?t get under consideration all variables? So, sure and no.

100 percent free internet hosting

A 100 % free internet hosting, like a rule, facilitates to build just the most rather simple webpages consisting of the established of HTML-pages. Quite often it is always achievable to implement the built-in discussion boards or visitor textbooks, yet, especially minimal for the options. Such as, free of registration of buyers, with no chance to average a discussion board or simply a visitor. Any websites management units are away from problem.

Yet one more stage is usually that for CMS operating php and mysql are important, but no zero cost internet hosting gives you this. In addition to, much more generally an internet hosting corporation that could be offering a zero cost internet hosting, makes use of online sites of clientele for adverts allocation. And, opening an online site over an absolutely free internet hosting, you will need to reconcile to existence of banners and pop-up windows on it. With the conclusion of the many domain title will belong for the internet hosting service. The costless internet hosting can be utilized for private webpages (e.g., I and my pastime), noncommercial tasks, as trial platforms. Substantial assignments, which intention to acquire profits, or company websites in many conditions make use of a paid out internet hosting.

Benefits of a paid out internet hosting

A paid out internet hosting is known as a chance to utilise all contemporary systems for just a web-resource development and assistance. A reasonable internet hosting allows for to open up a resource site for your compact or possibly a moderate-sized business, or perhaps a modest undertaking. Enormous portals use more costly tariff schedules. But in almost any circumstance every undertaking gets qualitative products.

Even a cheap internet hosting will allow for to employ php and mysql (from just one to a range of databases). This implies, the task operator can put in a material control technique (CMS) with no which customization and repair of the present-day web-resource is rather arduous. Furthermore, it happens to be viable to help make a qualitative discussion board, the visitor e-book, so as to add well known scripts (for instance, voting, the type of a suggestions together with other). All of this is likely to make the venture on an affordable internet hosting a good deal far more intriguing plus more desirable compared along with the restricted completely free internet hosting.

A crucial interrogation is actually a domain identify. Any paid out internet hosting, which include a reasonable internet hosting, enables to make use of a domain title of one?s 2nd amount ( .internet, .com, .org and so forth.). As a consequence the domain identify belongs into a shopper from the internet hosting corporation which is his/her home. Moreover, to market an internet site is feasible provided that the location is found on the paid out internet hosting. For selling internet websites on the 100 percent free internet hosting it?s expected far more attempts as internet search engine crawlers give consideration to them considerably less absolutely serious. By aggressive queries it is actually pretty much unreal for that websites with a free of cost internet hosting to become to the very best of the online search engine outcome web page.

Hence, even an affordable internet hosting presents a lot additional pros, instead than the usual absolutely free internet hosting. The compensated internet hosting is definitely a metric of solidity of the resource site and gravity of intentions of its house owners. Is mobile health about to enter a patent thicket? | mobihealthnews

OrionBy Orion Armon, IP Litigation practice group, Cooley LLP

Until now, the mHealth industry has experienced relatively few patent infringement conflicts, and little or no litigation instituted by non-practicing entities. But these trends may be disrupted within the next few years.? Companies in the medical device, computer, networking, and communications industries are all patenting in the mHealth space, and the likely result will be a thicket of overlapping patents on mHealth products and their components. As the patent thicket grows, patent infringement conflicts likely will increase?especially as mHealth technologies mature and winners within the industry emerge.

To help you navigate the patent thicket, this article discusses the current patent landscape in the mHealth industry and concludes with recommendations that mHealth companies could pursue to manage their intellectual property more effectively and reduce patent infringement risk.

Summary of Findings

  • The number of mHealth patents issued by the Patent Office has increased steadily since 2000 (when the number of mHealth patent applications was negligible), and will continue to surge until at least 2014.
  • Large companies are winning the mHealth patent race by obtaining the vast majority of newly-issued mHealth patents.
  • Intellectual Ventures, a non-practicing patent aggregator, is patenting aggressively in the mHealth space.? Licensing demands and litigation from IV (and possibly other NPEs) are sure to follow.
  • Almost half of the top twenty mHealth patent holders are not mHealth companies, or even medical device developers.
  • The incidence of mHealth patent infringement conflicts likely will increase as companies become more profitable and patent portfolios mature.? To manage patent infringement risk, companies should consider the following options:
    • If you have never been sued, consider purchasing insurance;
    • Properly structure IP indemnification rights and obligations;
    • Build-out your patent portfolio?even ancillary improvements in the mHealth space may become critical if they are widely adopted by your competitors;
    • Streamline? your internal invention disclosure, review, and patent filing processes, and where appropriate, use the USPTO?s Track 1 process to accelerate examination of key patent applications;
    • Monitor competitors? patent filings and patent portfolios, and consider making pre-issuance submissions of prior art during prosecution of competitors? patents;
    • Proactively cross-license patents with key IP owners to expand your freedom to operate?or utilize commodity components from major companies who will indemnify you for their use; and
    • If competitors are infringing, consider enforcing your patents before your competitors? patent portfolios mature.

So Far, No Significant Uptick in mHealth Litigation Activity

The mHealth industry has seen a few patent infringement lawsuits this year, including the following notable cases:

  • CardioNet filed lawsuits against MedNet Healthcare, MedTel 24, Rhythm Watch, AMI Cardiac Monitoring, ScottCare, and Ambucore Health Solutions;
  • Robert Bosch Healthcare filed lawsuits against ExpressMD, MedApps, Waldo Health, and Cardiocom; and
  • BodyMedia filed a lawsuit against Basis Science.

The volume of patent litigation in the mHealth industry is low relative to related industries such as the computer, smartphone, and medical device industries. The following factors likely play a role in damping the amount of patent litigation in the mHealth industry:

  • The difficult funding environment and poor economy make the expense of litigation unpalatable;
  • The industry is rapidly evolving and it is unclear which technologies and solutions will be profitable ?winners?; and
  • Many companies are still in the process of building their patent portfolios.

The influence of these factors will wane as the economy stabilizes, the mHealth industry matures, and companies obtain more patents on mHealth technologies. Some mHealth companies are already becoming more aggressive about defending their intellectual property rights.

For example, AirStrip, a company that offers a mobile patient monitoring platform, announced in September 2012 that it obtained a patent (U.S. Patent No. 8,255,238) on technology for sending and displaying physiologic data on a mobile device.? In an interview with MobiHealthNews, AirStrip?s President and Chief Medical Officer, Dr. Cameron Powell, claimed that his company?s patents cover ?taking any type of physiologic data?whether that?s from a sensor in the shoe, a home monitor, a blood pressure cuff, or a monitor in the hospital?and then re-rendering it on a native or HTML5 application on a mobile device.??At the time, Powell noted that, ?[t]he message here to the industry is not that we are issuing this press release to stop every company out there who is doing this, [but], who knows, there may be a few fringe players who we have an issue with.? More recently, on October 18, 2012, AirStrip filed a lawsuit against mVisum, Inc. in the Southern District of New York alleging that mVisum?s CCS, Live Stream, OB, and onDemand products infringe AirStrip?s ?238 patent. As is typical in such lawsuits, AirStrip?s Complaint requests an injunction barring future infringement, treble damages, and attorneys? fees.

Similarly, after filing several lawsuits against competitors in the home health monitoring field, Robert Bosch Healthcare?s spokeswoman declared that ?[w]e feel it is important to demonstrate that IP is important, and not just to our company. Bosch Healthcare Systems, like most high-tech companies, values its intellectual property as an essential asset of its business. Bosch is open to working with those companies that are interested in securing this technology through a licensing agreement, and we are in discussion with numerous companies in this regard.?

Patent owners in many industries tout their patent rights and use their patents to attack alleged infringers. AirStrip?s and Robert Bosch Healthcare?s actions are notable because they seem to indicate that mHealth companies are becoming more assertive about their patent rights. Loudly advertising patent rights and filing patent infringement lawsuits tends to create insecurities in competitors that may spark patent arms races or precipitate business disputes that result in additional litigation.

Authorities: Meth lab remnants found on playground

By NBC News staff

A Tennessee teacher discovered the remnants of a mobile methamphetamine lab on a playground when she took her class out for recess,?WSMV.com reported.

"Meth-making material that was part of a shake-and-bake meth lab was discovered on the school playground," Sgt. Kyle Evans, Murfreesboro, Tenn., ?police spokesman, told WSMV.

Children did not come in contact with the drug-making paraphernalia -- a soda bottle and plastic tubing -- but the area was decontaminated as a precaution, WSMV said. No drugs were found inside the bottle, which had a hole poked in the top.

According to the report, one of the ingredients used to prevent grass from growing in the mulch can also be used to make meth.

?

"To the best of my knowledge, this is the first time we've had anything like this happen on one of our campus," Lisa Trail, Murfreesboro City Schools spokeswoman, told WSMV. "We hope it's the last time, but this is a learning experience."

Police said they have no leads yet as to who left the materials at the playground, News Channel 5 reported.

"Our teacher and our assistant principal handled it wonderfully," Trail told News Channel 5. "We did reach out to our parents, to let them know in advance what was found here, and how it's been taken care of."

The Mitchell Neilson Primary School in Murfreesboro is home to kindergarten, first grade and second grade students,?according to News Channel 5.

Four Films and Composers Selected for 2012 Sundance Institute ...

Sundance Institute has announced the four documentary film projects and composers that have been paired together for the tenth Composers + Documentary Lab, October 26 through November 1 at Sundance Resort in Sundance, Utah. The Lab is a joint initiative of the Institute?s Documentary Film Program and Fund (DFP) and Film Music Program.

Built upon the Sundance Institute Lab model launched in 1981 by Robert Redford, Fellows participate in an unique residential retreat focused on the role of music and sound design in documentary film. Four composers along with four documentary projects from a pool of over 100 active DFP-supported films were selected. Each composer is paired with a filmmaker to compose and record original music for a section of the work-in-progress film. A team of award-winning filmmakers and composers participate as Advisors and work with Sundance Institute staff to guide the process and also screen and discuss their work. Advisors for the 2012 Lab are filmmakers Rob Epstein (Howl, Celluloid Closet), Vivien Hillgrove (In the Matter of Cha Jung Hee) and DFP Director Cara Mertes, as well as music editor Adam Smalley and composers Todd Boekelheide (Blessed is the Match), Miriam Cutler and Film Music Program Director Peter Golub (Wordplay, These Amazing Shadows).

Cara Mertes, Director of the DFP, said, ?This Lab is unique in the world; through it we have seen the escalation of the use of original composition in cinematic documentary. During the week, we focus on familiarizing outstanding documentary directors with the potential of original music in their films. The composers commonly have established musical careers but have not composed for film, and documentary storytelling is uniquely suited to benefit from the attributes of an inspired musical score and soundscape.?

Peter Golub, Director of the Film Music Program, said, ?Composers for documentaries face unique challenges yet there are few opportunities for them to work with documentarians and focus specifically on overcoming those obstacles. The Composers + Documentary Lab provides valuable hands-on experience composing for documentary film. Obama and Romney meet for final debate as race tightens

BOCA RATON, Florida (Reuters) - President Barack Obama and Republican challenger Mitt Romney face off in front of the cameras for a final time on Monday as opinion polls show their battle for the White House has tightened to a dead heat.

With 15 days to go until the November 6 election, the two candidates turn to foreign policy for their third and last debate, which starts at 9 p.m. (0100 GMT on Tuesday).

The stakes are high, as the two candidates are tied at 46 percent each in the Reuters/Ipsos online daily tracking poll.

The debate will likely be the last time either candidate will be able to directly appeal to millions of voters - especially the roughly 20 pct who have yet to make up their minds or who could still switch their support.

Obama comes to this debate with several advantages. As sitting president, he has been deeply involved with national security and foreign affairs for the past three-and-a-half years. He can point to a number of successes on his watch, from the end of the Iraq war to the killing of Osama bin Laden.

But Romney will have many chances to steer the conversation back toward the sluggish U.S. economy, a topic on which voters see him as more credible. He will also try to use unease about a nuclear Iran and turmoil in Libya to sow doubts about Obama's leadership at home and abroad.

Romney launched his candidacy with an accusation that Obama was not representing U.S. interests aggressively enough, but after a decade of war voters have little appetite for further entanglements abroad. After a clumsy overseas trip in July, Romney will have to demonstrate to voters that he could ably represent the United States on the world stage.

"What he needs to do is get through this third debate by showing a close familiarity with the issues and a demeanor in foreign policy that is not threatening," said Cal Jillson, a political science professor at Southern Methodist University.

Presidential debates have not always been consequential, but this year they have had an impact.

Romney's strong performance in the first debate in Denver on October 3 helped him recover from a series of stumbles and wiped out Obama's advantage in opinion polls.

Obama fared better in their second encounter on October 16, but that has not helped him regain the lead.

The Obama campaign is now playing defense as it tries to limit Romney's gains in several of the battleground states that will decide the election.

Romney could have a hard time winning the White House if he does not carry Ohio. A new Quinnipiac/CBS poll shows Obama leading by 5 percentage points in the Midwestern state, but another by Suffolk University shows the two candidates tied there.

LAST-CHANCE DEBATE

More than 60 million viewers watched each of their previous two debates, but the television audience this time could be smaller as it will air at the same time as high-profile baseball and football games.

Much of the exchange, which takes place at Lynn University in Boca Raton, Florida, will likely focus on the Middle East.

Campaigning in Canton, Ohio, on Monday, Vice President Joe Biden reminded voters of Obama's pledge to pull troops out of Afghanistan in the next two years and pointed out that Romney and his running mate Paul Ryan have made no such guarantees.

"They said, quote, it depends. Ladies and gentlemen, like everything with them, it depends," Biden said. "It depends on what day you find these guys."

At their second debate last week, the two presidential candidates clashed bitterly over Libya, a preview of what is to come on Monday evening. They argued over Obama's handling of the attack last month on the U.S. consulate in Benghazi in which Ambassador Chris Stevens and three other Americans were killed.

The Obama administration first labeled the incident a spontaneous reaction to a video made in the United States that lampooned the Prophet Mohammad. Later, it said it was a terrorist assault on the anniversary of the September 11, 2001, attacks.

This shifting account, and the fact that Obama went on a campaign trip the day after the attack, has given Romney ammunition to use at Monday's debate.

"The statements were either misleading by intention or they were misleading by accident. Either way, though, he's got to get to the bottom of this," Romney adviser Dan Senor said on NBC's "Today" show.

Obama and his allies charge that Romney exploited the Benghazi attack for political points while officials were still accounting for the wellbeing of U.S. diplomats.

Regarding foreign policy overall, Obama's allies accuse Romney of relying on generalities and platitudes.

"It is astonishing that Romney has run for president for six years and never once bothered to put forward a plan to end the war in Afghanistan, for example, or to formulate a policy to go after al Qaeda," U.S. Senator John Kerry, the Democrats' 2004 presidential nominee, wrote in a memo released by the Obama campaign on Monday.

Romney has promised to tighten the screws over Iran's nuclear program and accused Obama of "leading from behind" as Syria's civil war expands. He also has faulted Obama for setting up a politically timed exit from the unpopular Afghanistan war, and accused him of failing to support Israel, an important ally in the Middle East.

The Republican challenger is likely to bring up a New York Times report from Saturday that said the United States and Iran had agreed in principle to hold bilateral negotiations to halt what Washington and its allies say is a plan by Tehran to develop nuclear weapons.

The 90-minute debate, moderated by Bob Schieffer of CBS, will be divided into six segments: America's role in the world; the war in Afghanistan; Israel and Iran; the changing Middle East; terrorism; and China's rise.

How I Am Overcoming Food Addiction | Jinjee's Blog

Jinjee How I Am Overcoming Food AddictionWow!

It is over! The darkest hour is just before dawn ? truly. Yep, I guess I?m a rock bottom girl. Gotta touch ground before I can spring up. Or maybe I just like to push boundaries. How much can I get away with? Or to give it a positive spin, I?m just trying to get to know myself and my limits.

What happened this time? As you know I?ve been playing on the edge of addiction. I felt like it was OK because it was helping me to better understand food addiction, which would help me to share my recovery process with others. But recently from time to time things got so bad that I was operating in a fog and my work was starting to suffer.

So lately I?ve been saying ?I?m done being a wounded healer, done being an example of a struggling raw vegan even though I know it helps a lot of people to feel like it is OK to struggle. It is OK. But I?m ready to be an example of someone who struggled and made it through to a 100% raw vegan diet, which is where I want to be, because it feels best to me?.

And the teacher came when the student was ready. Barbara Gabriel, a marriage and family therapist, and raw vegan, came to our retreat and shared with me a ground-breaking new branch of psychology called Emotional Brain Training (EBT) based on the latest research in the field of brain science. I?ve been having weekly EBT sessions with her and now am part of a weekly EBT telegroup we put together. I had been wishing I could afford some kind of counselling as there were areas of my life that were just too confusing for me and that I felt a professional therapist could help me to sort out.

Another prayer answered! I?ve been practicing EBT for 3 months now and I am gaining tremendous clarity on these issues! I haven?t been totally diligent but it doesn?t matter. Whatever work you do to re-wire your brain is enough. It is becoming quite fun, and fascinating, feeling this new power to actually get some reins hooked up to this wild beast of an organ.

I say it is starting to become fun, because although at first my food addiction rapidly improved, it then got worse. Then it got worse than ever. And I thought maybe I?d have to give up EBT because it had opened up a Pandora?s box of issues and I was questioning whether I really had time to deal with them at this point in my life. Too big. Too much.

I was enjoying the clarity, the consciousness, the awareness, the feeling my feelings, the calmness that came from this. But then I was also experiencing some very dark, very numb episodes. These were triggered by shame regarding my food addictions, even though I espouse the credo ?No beating up on yourself?. I didn?t know what was happening. It was confusing. I tried to work the EBT tools during these times, with just a very little success I supposed.

But then the next day I?d feel great. And my addiction would be much lessened. And then Barbara told me that those inexplicable numb depressions were brain state 5?s, the reptilian brain state, where you are really in the worst emotional state possible. They happen to everyone but they can get more intense or happen more frequently when you are doing the EBT work. And that?s good because it is while you are in 4?s and 5?s that you can actually rewire your brain.

It is almost like EBT allowed me to really feel my lows more than I had before ? because it is teaching me to really feel my feelings. Previously, I was in denial or I?d escape with food. Even though I was still going to food, I was minimizing harm (part of one of the tools), and while I was eating I was also trying to practice compassion for myself (another of the EBT tools).

Even though I felt like I was not succeeding, I feel now that I did succeed. I definitely re-wired something while in that state, without even realizing it! Only now when I have been free of addiction for days do I believe and see that I have re-wired my brain to deal better with stress, to be more conscious of what I?m feeling, and to develop better habits. I?m earning the rewards of connection.

I believe now that rather than feeling my feelings and stating my feelings and seeing how true or not they were, I would eat. I would eat to avoid a brain state 5, or to numb it. But by really going through a brain state 5 more consciously, more fully, with food or without (because actually the food did not work to numb it this time!) I actually got something I needed out of that state.

Maybe I just needed to be in it ? because it was real. Maybe I just needed to know that I feel like complete crap about hiding my cooked food addiction from my kids, and about eating cooked foods while feeding them raw and admitting to myself how detestable I find myself for that. Maybe I had to have a talk with myself while in brain state 5 to get that information from myself. Yes, I think that is what happened.

One interesting thing about this work is that you put your emotions in to words, and by stating them you can see more easily what is true and what you are just making up.

I have to say I no longer expect to be done with my issues ? moods and behaviors ? permanently. I know I?m a work in progress, and always will be. And that?s OK. Like anything else, it is work. And it works if you work it.

Speaking of connection, I was realizing that I needed to be diligent about my prayer and gratitude practice to balance out the EBT work I was doing, which was basically learning to acknowledge negative emotions within me. And so this happened yesterday morning: I finally managed to have a great prayer on the beach. It was very connected. More connected than I?d been in a long time.

I?m sure the EBT was partially responsible for this. And it was so magical that I knew I wanted this connection all the time. And in that moment I knew that I wanted to keep the channels free of clogging food; food that clogged my small capillaries causing carpel tunnel and blurry eye-sight, and that also clogged my spiritual channels. Well, the spirit channels got clogged because my self-esteem would get too low (too gunky) to pray when I abused food.

I?m now having an amazing feeing of freedom. I had really become desperate, not even being able to imagine being free of my addictions, almost not wanting to be free. And I felt as though my spark had gone out. So I?m incredulous at the sudden and surprising freedom. I know I?m over it for now. But I need to prove that to myself by staying clean. Because now I?m feeling like I can have a little non-raw food without danger. But that could very well be an illusion.

I?m not going to say ?once an addict always an addict? and label myself like that. I?m not going to make that my reason for staying on the wagon. I will instead say that I desire to eat only foods that are alive and vibrant with life force energy and sparkly brightness to my toungue! And that is completely true ? not just an affirmation of my future intention ? This is now! This is real! This is the way I feel!

I?m so grateful for this feeling. I?m going to live! I?m going to be able to claim my mantle and do the work I?ve been positioned to do in the world! My heart could burst with happiness! :)

In Joy!

Factbox: Facts about former Senator George McGovern

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Former U.S. Senator George McGovern, a leading Democratic liberal whose anti-Vietnam War stance cost him the 1972 presidential race against Republican Richard Nixon, died on Sunday at the age of 90, his family said.

* McGovern, who grew up in South Dakota, volunteered for military service at age 19 and went on 35 combat missions in World War Two as pilot of a bomber named the Dakota Queen. He won the Distinguished Flying Cross for safely landing the plane on an island in the Adriatic after two of its four engines had been knocked out.

* McGovern won only 37.5 percent of the popular vote in the 1972 election, compared to incumbent president Richard Nixon's 60.7 percent. Nixon won the Electoral College vote, 520-17, in one of the most lopsided presidential elections in U.S. history.

* In that election, McGovern won the vote only in Massachusetts and the District of Columbia. Later as Nixon's presidency unraveled in the Watergate scandal, bumper stickers saying "Don't blame me, I'm from Massachusetts" and buttons saying "Don't blame me, I voted for McGovern" began to appear.

* McGovern said he moved on from the defeat but 12 years later another defeated Democratic presidential candidate, Walter Mondale, asked him how long it took to get over losing in a landslide. "I'll let you know when I get there," McGovern replied.

* In addition to his 1972 campaign, McGovern had been a presidential candidate in 1968 after the assassination of front-runner Robert F. Kennedy but lost the Democratic nomination to Hubert Humphrey. He also had a short-lived presidential run in 1984.

* McGovern served in the U.S. Senate from 1963 to 1981, when he was defeated by a Republican in the party's 1980 sweep when Ronald Reagan won the White House. He served in the U.S. House of Representatives from 1957 to 1961.

* Having grown up in a farming state, McGovern had a long-running interest the world food supply and fighting hunger. President John F. Kennedy chose him to head the domestic-international Food for Peace program in 1961 and in 1998 President Bill Clinton named him U.S. ambassador to the U.N. Agencies for Food and Agriculture. He and Republican Bob Dole, another former senator and unsuccessful presidential candidate, also started a program to feed children around the world. In 2001 McGovern published a book titled "The Third Freedom: Ending Hunger in Our Time."

* In October 2007 McGovern endorsed Senator Hillary Clinton for the Democratic presidential nomination but seven months later switched to Senator Barack Obama and urged Clinton to drop out of the race.

* After politics, McGovern founded a nonprofit organization to help alcoholics in the name of his daughter Teresa. She died of exposure while intoxicated in 1994 after years of addiction.

Home Equity Loan vs. Home Equity Credit | Expert Financial Advice ...

When deciding whether to apply for a home equity loan or a line of credit, it?s important to consider how much you?ll need and how soon you?ll need it.? If you want a fixed amount of money for a specific purpose (e.g., remodeling the kitchen), you may wish to take out a home equity loan that advances you the total amount up front. If instead you?ll need an indeterminate amount over a few years (e.g., funds for ongoing college expenses), you may benefit most from a home equity line of credit that you can draw on when needed.

Prosecutors seek gag order in Trayvon Martin murder case

ORLANDO, Florida (Reuters) - Prosecutors want a Florida judge to clamp a gag order on the Trayvon Martin murder case, saying lawyers for the man charged with murdering the unarmed black teenager threaten to taint the jury pool by trying the case "in the media and not in the courtroom."

The request for a gag order was filed by Assistant State Attorney Bernie de la Rionda in Seminole County Circuit Court on Thursday.

The motion came just before George Zimmerman, the former neighborhood watch volunteer charged with second-degree murder for the shooting death of Martin on February 26, was due to return to court on Friday afternoon for a pre-trial hearing.

"This case has continued to have an inordinate amount of media coverage," de la Rionda said in his motion.

"Unless defense counsel stops talking to the media about the case, in person or by use of the defendant's website, it will be more difficult to find jurors who have not been influenced by media accounts of the case," he said.

It is the second time de la Rionda has requested a gag order in the case, which grabbed the media spotlight and triggered public outrage because police in the central Florida town of Sanford initially declined to arrest Zimmerman.

Zimmerman has pleaded not guilty.

De la Rionda filed his first motion for a gag order in April when another judge, who was later forced off the case, declined the request to muzzle Zimmerman's lawyers.

"This case should be tried in the courtroom and not in the media," de la Rionda said in his new motion. He noted that Zimmerman's lead attorney, Mark O'Mara, had taken to national television as well as the Internet and social media sites including Facebook and Twitter to comment on the case.

It was not immediately clear if Judge Debra Nelson would take up the issue of a gag order in the hearing due to get under way at 1:30 p.m. (1730 GMT) in Sanford, near Orlando.

But Nelson, who earlier this week set a tentative June 10 date for Zimmerman's trial, could approve a defense request for Martin's school and social media records at Friday's hearing.

Prosecutors want the judge to seal any records obtained by the defense until the court decides whether the defense is entitled to those records and whether they should be made public.

Prosecutors have said in court filings that Zimmerman's lawyers were on a "fishing expedition" for background information about Martin that could potentially be used "to influence public perception or otherwise curry favor with potential jurors."

At the same time, O'Mara has sought to block a prosecution request for the release of more of Zimmerman's medical records, citing what he said was his client's right to privacy.

Martin's school records could provide details of any history of disciplinary action. At the time of his death, the 17-year-old was staying at his father's fianc?e's townhome in a gated subdivision in Sanford.

He was serving a 10-day suspension from his Miami high school after being caught with a baggie that contained traces of marijuana.

Zimmerman has said he acted in self-defense when he shot Martin, who was walking back from a convenience store to the townhome where he was staying with his father.

O'Mara has said he would seek to have the murder charge dismissed in a hearing in April or May under Florida's Stand Your Ground law, which allows individuals in fear for their life to use deadly force in self-defense.
