When Tim Brown and Jerry Rice made their bizarre accusations that their former coach, Bill Callahan, sabotaged the team in Super Bowl XXXVII, they both dragged former Raiders center Barret Robbins into it: Brown and Rice both said they thought Robbins, who abruptly left the team the day before the game, had a mental breakdown that was triggered by Callahan suddenly and unexpectedly changing the game plan.

Robbins, however, says he doesn?t remember that.

In an interview with Sports Radio 610, Robbins said that he had been dealing with mental and physical health issues before the Raiders got to the Super Bowl, and Robbins says he has no memory of anything related to Callahan?s game plan for that game.

?I would be absolutely wrong to tell you that that was the case,? Robbins said. ?If Tim Brown goes on record and says that he changed the game plan on Friday, I don?t remember. Because you?ve got to understand, I was going through a manic episode that had lasted more than two weeks. At that point in time, when we went to the Super Bowl, I was having to shoot my foot up, I was having acupuncture, going through a lot of pain. It was a lot of stress. Pain is a big trigger when it comes to bipolar, that was something I was going through, as well as self-medicating.?

Robbins also said, however, that he doesn?t have any reason to believe Brown was wrong.

?I?m not going to say that I remember the exact meeting that that took place, but I haven?t heard anybody deny it,? Robbins said.

If Robbins hasn?t heard anybody deny it, that simply means he hasn?t been paying attention to the story. Callahan has denied it in the strongest terms, and he?s been backed up by multiple people who were in the Raiders? offensive meetings before the Super Bowl, including former quarterback Rich Gannon, former offensive tackle Lincoln Kennedy and former assistant coach Jim Harbaugh. And Brown himself has backed off his initial claims.

It?s been more than a month since Brown made his initial accusation against Callahan, and the topic is still being raised with players and coaches who were on that Raiders team. Whether he meant to or not, Brown opened a very large can of worms when he suggested that his old coach threw the Super Bowl.

France Plans Military Presence in West Africa After Mali War: UN Sources

'French diplomats have started briefing the UN, the US and other major powers on a plan for a so-called ?beyond the horizon? force which will purportedly be tasked with conducting necessary future operations against the fighters in Mali.

France has not informed its allies of the exact location of the force, but diplomats say it will probably be stationed in Senegal, Niger, or Chad, where France has military bases.

On January 11, France launched a war in Mali under the pretext of halting the advance of fighters who had taken control of the north of the West African country. The United States, Canada, Britain, Belgium, Germany, and Denmark have aided France in its war on the African country.'

NYC public school teacher?s math homework asks students about whipping, killing slaves

Controversy swirls around a teacher in New York City who decided it would be a good idea to give her fourth-graders homework questions that combine basic math with the whipping and mutiny-related deaths of slaves.

Public School 59 teacher Jane Youn assigned the brazenly politically-incorrect story problems to her students in January, reports the New York Daily News. Another teacher, Jacqueline Vitucci, had copied the offensive questions and was going to assign them before common sense somehow intervened.

NewsOne.com lists a couple example questions:

?One slave got whipped five times a day. How many times did he get whipped in a month (31 days)??

?In a slave ship, there can be 3,799 slaves. One day, the slaves took over the ship. 1,897 are dead. How many slaves are alive??

In a statement, a representative from the New York City Department of Education explained that Youn, 32, had been covering the history of slavery in social studies. The nine-year-olds were interested in the subject and, consequently, they used the sensitive topic during a math lesson to create word problems.

?This is obviously unacceptable and we will take appropriate disciplinary action against these teachers,? the statement also said.

Youn might have gotten away with the questions about killing and flogging slaves if it wasn?t for Aziza Harding, a meddling student teacher,?NewsOne.com reports. Harding noticed the alarming content of the questions as she was photocopying them for use in another class.

?I?m just like, wow, this is really inappropriate,? the New York University graduate student told NewsOne. ?It shouldn?t be a homework assignment, and I did not want to make copies of this.?

Statistics from the city?s Department of Education show that the general student population at the Upper East Side elementary school is about 60 percent white ? higher than the city average. Some 15 percent of the students are Hispanic. The number of black students comprises less than five percent.

The Daily News describes the school as ?well-off? and says that parents were flabbergasted when they heard about the blatantly insensitive questions.

?I don?t think that?s reflective at all of what the school is about,? one unnamed parent told the newspaper.

School principal Adele Schroeter released a statement expressing her outrage.

?I have already met with the teacher and have arranged for training around this issue for the entire staff at my school,? Schroeter said.

Both Youn and Vitucci declined to comment, according to the Daily News.

Sprint Force LTE handset leaks, due March 1st from ZTE

Sometimes tips come out of the blue: while one of our editors was out and about earlier today, someone sent him the Sprint product page above. Turns out it's for a 4-inch Sprint-branded Android phone, the Force, which looks like a version of ZTE's rumored Force that will conveniently work with the carrier's sparkling new LTE installations. Specs are middling, with Android 4.0, an unnamed 1.5GHz dual-core processor, 4-inch Gorilla Glass adorned display, 5-megapixel rear camera, 1-megapixel front camera, 1GB of RAM, 4GB of ROM and a 1,730mAh battery. Still, that'll give you quick connection speeds for $50 when it launches March 1st -- presumably on a 2-year contract -- joining its more upmarket 4G ZTE stablemate, the 4.5-inch Flash, at Sprint.

White House seeks 'balanced way' to budget fix

FILE - This March 6, 2011 file photo shows then-Deputy National Security Adviser Denis McDonough speaking in Sterling, Va. He said the economy has been getting stronger over the past few months, and that Obama "is doing everything he can to not let this happen." (AP Photo/Cliff Owen, File)

(AP) ? President Barack Obama is concerned about the effect that looming, drastic across-the-board budget cuts will have on the middle class, his new chief of staff said Sunday. Congressional Republicans predicted the cuts would start as scheduled next month and blamed Obama not only for doing little to stop them but for the idea itself.

The cuts, called the sequester, would drain $85 billion from the government's budget over the coming seven months. Actual cuts may be around 13 percent for defense and 9 percent for other programs because lawmakers delayed their impact, requiring savings over a shorter period of time. The White House last week let loose a list of ways Americans would feel the trims, from longer waits at airport security to as many as 13,000 teachers being laid off. Outgoing Secretary of Defense Leon Panetta told a congressional panel the sequester would hollow the U.S. military because it would give the Pentagon little leeway in deciding how best to spend the money.

Denis McDonough, the president's chief of staff, warned the cuts would come as the stock market is coming back, the housing market has improved and the number of jobs has grown, and urged Congress to consider a balanced approach that would further strengthen the economy and, in turn, the middle class.

"This isn't a spending fight for us," McDonough told NBC's "Meet the Press." ''This is a fight about whether we're going to make the investments in middle class families in this country, in education, in science and technology, in food inspection, and those kinds of things."

Senate Democrats last week offered a plan they say is a balanced approach of more revenue and budget cuts. The White House supports the proposal, but it drew an icy reception from Republicans, who say the president got the tax increases he wanted during the agreement to avoid the "fiscal cliff."

"The question isn't whether we're going to insist on some position because that's the ideologically right position," McDonough said. "This should not be a social science experiment. This should be a question where we ask ourselves, what is most important to the economy, what is most important to the middle class families of this country, and that's the way the president is going to do this."

South Carolina's Sen. Lindsay Graham was among the Republicans on Sunday who recalled the president's position on the sequester in the fall.

"The president promised in the campaign sequestration would not happen. Now, he is allowing it to happen," Graham said on "Fox News Sunday."

"He's the commander-in-chief and on his watch, we're going to begin to unravel the finest military in the history of the world, at a time when we need it most," Graham, a member of the Armed Services Committee added. "If you want to look at ways to find $1.2 trillion in savings over the next decade, let's look at Obamacare. Let's don't destroy the military and just cut blindly across the board. There are many ways to do this."

      However, Graham offered no specifics.

The Democrats propose generating revenue from plugging some tax loopholes. Those include tax breaks for the oil and gas industry and businesses that have sent jobs overseas and taxing millionaires at a rate of at least 30 percent.

Rep. Paul Ryan, who chairs the Budget Committee, advocates for plugging loopholes, but as part of a discussion on tax reform, not sequestration.

"Loopholes are necessary for tax reform," Ryan said on ABC's "This Week." ''If you take them for spending, you're blocking tax reform and you're really not getting the deficit under control."

With the March 1 deadline fast approaching, Sen. Chuck Schumer, a New York Democrat and close ally of the White House, predicted that Republicans will eventually join Democrats to avoid the cuts.

"They have no choice," Schumer said on CNN's "State of the Union." ''Their arguments are untenable and don't meet the favor of hardly anyone other than themselves and the special interests they're protecting."

Largest known prime number discovered; has 17,425,170 digits

Feb. 13, 2013 ? On January 25th at 23:30:26 UTC, the largest known prime number, 257,885,161-1, was discovered on Great Internet Mersenne Prime Search (GIMPS) volunteer Curtis Cooper's computer. The new prime number, 2 multiplied by itself 57,885,161 times, less one, has 17,425,170 digits. With 360,000 CPUs peaking at 150 trillion calculations per second, 17th-year GIMPS is the longest continuously-running global "grassroots supercomputing"[1] project in Internet history.

Dr. Cooper is a professor at the University of Central Missouri. This is the third record prime for Dr. Cooper and his University. Their first record prime was discovered in 2005, eclipsed by their second record in 2006. Computers at UCLA broke that record in 2008 with a 12,978,189 digit prime number. UCLA held the record until University of Central Missouri reclaimed the world record with this discovery. The new primality proof took 39 days of non-stop computing on one of the university's PCs. Dr. Cooper and the University of Central Missouri are the largest individual contributors to the project. The discovery is eligible for a $3,000 GIMPS research discovery award.

The new prime number is a member of a special class of extremely rare prime numbers known as Mersenne primes. It is only the 48th known Mersenne prime ever discovered, each increasingly difficult to find. Mersenne primes were named for the French monk Marin Mersenne, who studied these numbers more than 350 years ago. GIMPS, founded in 1996, has discovered all 14 of the largest known Mersenne primes. Volunteers download a free program to search for these primes with a cash award offered to anyone lucky enough to compute a new prime. Chris Caldwell maintains an authoritative web site on the largest known primes as well as the history of Mersenne primes.

To prove there were no errors in the prime discovery process, the new prime was independently verified using different programs running on different hardware. Serge Batalov ran Ernst Mayer's MLucas software on a 32-core server in 6 days (resource donated by Novartis[2] IT group) to verify the new prime. Jerry Hallett verified the prime using the CUDALucas software running on a NVidia GPU in 3.6 days. Finally, Dr. Jeff Gilchrist verified the find using the GIMPS software on an Intel i7 CPU in 4.5 days and the CUDALucas program on a NVidia GTX 560 Ti in 7.7 days.

GIMPS software was developed by founder, George Woltman, in Orlando, Florida. Scott Kurowski, in San Diego, California, wrote and maintains the PrimeNet system that coordinates all the GIMPS clients. Volunteers have a chance to earn research discovery awards of $3,000 or $50,000 if their computer discovers a new Mersenne prime. GIMPS' next major goal is to win the $150,000 award administered by the Electronic Frontier Foundation offered for finding a 100 million digit prime number.

Credit for GIMPS' prime discoveries goes not only to Dr. Cooper for running the software on his University's computers, Woltman and Kurowski for authoring the software and running the project, but also the thousands of GIMPS volunteers that sifted through millions of non-prime candidates. Therefore, official credit for this discovery shall go to "C. Cooper, G. Woltman, S. Kurowski, et al."

About Mersenne.org's Great Internet Mersenne Prime Search

The Great Internet Mersenne Prime Search (GIMPS) was formed in January 1996 by George Woltman to discover new world-record-size Mersenne primes. In 1997 Scott Kurowski enabled GIMPS to automatically harness the power of hundreds of thousands of ordinary computers to search for these "needles in a haystack." Most GIMPS members join the search for the thrill of possibly discovering a record-setting, rare, and historic new Mersenne prime. The search for more Mersenne primes is already under way. There may be smaller, as yet undiscovered Mersenne primes, and there certainly are larger Mersenne primes waiting to be found. Anyone with a reasonably powerful PC can join GIMPS and become a big prime hunter, and possibly earn a cash research discovery award. All the necessary software can be downloaded for free at www.mersenne.org/freesoft.htm. GIMPS is organized as Mersenne Research, Inc., a 501(c)(3) science research charity. Additional information may be found at www.mersenneforum.org and www.mersenne.org; donations are welcome.

For More Information on Mersenne Primes

Prime numbers have long fascinated amateur and professional mathematicians. An integer greater than one is called a prime number if its only divisors are one and itself. The first prime numbers are 2, 3, 5, 7, 11, etc. For example, the number 10 is not prime because it is divisible by 2 and 5. A Mersenne prime is a prime number of the form 2P-1. The first Mersenne primes are 3, 7, 31, and 127 corresponding to P = 2, 3, 5, and 7 respectively. There are only 48 known Mersenne primes.

Mersenne primes have been central to number theory since they were first discussed by Euclid in 350 BC. The man whose name they now bear, the French monk Marin Mersenne (1588-1648), made a famous conjecture on which values of P would yield a prime. It took 300 years and several important discoveries in mathematics to settle his conjecture.

Previous GIMPS Mersenne prime discoveries were made by members in various countries. In April 2009, Odd Magnar Strindmo et al. discovered the 47th known Mersenne prime in Norway. In September 2008, Hans-Michael Elvenich et al. discovered the 46th known Mersenne prime in Germany. In August 2008, Edson Smith et al. discovered the 45th known Mersenne prime in the U.S. In September 2006, Curtis Cooper and Steven Boone et al. discovered the 44th known Mersenne prime in the U.S. In December 2005, Curtis Cooper and Steven Boone et al. discovered the 43rd known Mersenne prime in the U.S. In February 2005, Dr. Martin Nowak et al. discovered the 42nd known Mersenne prime in Germany. In May 2004, Josh Findley et al. discovered the 41st known Mersenne prime in the U.S. In November 2003, Michael Shafer et al. discovered the 40th known Mersenne prime in the U.S. In November 2001, Michael Cameron et al. discovered the 39th Mersenne prime in Canada. In June 1999, Nayan Hajratwala et al. discovered the 38th Mersenne prime in the U.S. In January 1998, Roland Clarkson et al. discovered the 37th Mersenne prime in the U.S. In August 1997, Gordon Spence et al. discovered the 36th Mersenne prime in the U.K. In November 1996, Joel Armengaud et al. discovered the 35th Mersenne prime in France.

There is a well-known formula that generates a "perfect" number from a Mersenne prime. A perfect number is one whose factors add up to the number itself. The smallest perfect number is 6 = 1 + 2 + 3. The newly discovered perfect number is 257,885,160 x (257,885,161-1). This number is over 34 million digits long!

There is a unique history to the arithmetic algorithms underlying the GIMPS project. The programs that found the recent big Mersenne finds are based on a special algorithm. In the early 1990's, the late Richard Crandall, Apple Distinguished Scientist, discovered ways to double the speed of what are called convolutions -- essentially big multiplication operations. The method is applicable not only to prime searching but other aspects of computation. During that work he also patented the Fast Elliptic Encryption system, now owned by Apple Computer, which uses Mersenne primes to quickly encrypt and decrypt messages. George Woltman implemented Crandall's algorithm in assembly language, thereby producing a prime-search program of unprecedented efficiency, and that work led to the successful GIMPS project.

School teachers from elementary through high-school grades have used GIMPS to get their students excited about mathematics. Students who run the free software are contributing to mathematical research. Historically, searching for Mersenne primes has been used as a test for computer hardware. The free GIMPS program has identified hidden hardware problems in many PCs.

Athletics-Kiptanui says Kenyan athletes are doping

NAIROBI, Feb 15 (Reuters) - Three-times world 3,000 metres steeplechase champion Moses Kiptanui said on Friday doping was taking place in Kenyan running camps.

"If you talk to athletes candidly, you get the feeling that doping is going on in these camps," he told Reuters by telephone from Eldoret.

Kiptanui, who won three world titles between 1991 and 1995, is the first high profile former Kenyan athlete to allege the African nation's runners are using performance-enhancing drugs.

He said the fluctuating performances of some Kenyan athletes were enough to arouse suspicion.

"They run well today and just (flop) the following moment. Surely, something is not right," the 42-year-old said.

Kiptanui said catching drugs cheats was difficult because they doped for specific races and the drugs could not be traced the following day.

Allegations that Kenyan athletes were using drugs surfaced ahead of the Olympic Games last year when German television broadcaster ARD reported systematic doping by Kenya's elite athletes who train in running camps in the Rift Valley region.

Athletics Kenya rejected the accusation and angrily accused the broadcaster of attempting to distract its athletes ahead of the London Games where Kenya performed dismally.

      CLAIMS REJECTED

Kenyan officials said in May they would investigate the claims, while World Anti-Doping Agency president John Fahey visited Kenya last year following the ARD documentary and held talks with Kenyan government officials.

Athletics Kenya secretary-general David Okeyo rejected the claims by Kiptanui and challenged him to provide evidence.

Okeyo said action was taken against athletes caught doping.

"One of the athletes who failed a doping test during last year's national championships was suspended and it is public knowledge. We also have suspended a few more athletes," Okeyo told Reuters.

"So to suggest that we are not taking action against those caught is not only malicious, but totally slanderous."

Athletics Kenya officials told Reuters that over the past 12 months four Kenyan runners have failed doping tests, including Jemima Jelagat Sumgong, the runner-up at the Boston marathon, and Rael Kiyara, who won the 2012 Hamburg women's marathon.

Mathew Kisorio, a former African junior champion in the 5,000 and 10,000 metres, tested positive for an anabolic steroid after the Kenyan championships last June while Ronald Kipchumba failed a drugs test following the Linz marathon in Austria. Australia jails China mining executive for insider trading

SYDNEY (AFP) - An Australian court on Friday sentenced a former vice-president of Chinese company Hanlong Mining Investment to more than two years in jail for insider trading, officials said.

Bo Shi Zhu, also known as Calvin Zhu, pleaded guilty to three charges of insider trading in July last year and will serve a minimum of 15 months, the Australian Securities and Investment Commission (ASIC) said in a statement.

"In making the order, (New South Wales Supreme Court Judge Peter) Hall, among other things, took into consideration Mr Zhu's high level of cooperation with ASIC's investigation and early guilty plea," ASIC said in a statement.

Zhu, 31, admitted making A$1.3 million (S$1.7 million) in share trading while working for three different employers, including Hanlong, after acquiring inside information about proposed takeovers. They included details related to Australian iron ore explorer Sundance Resources and uranium explorer Bannerman, which were both takeover targets of Hanlong.

'Sesame Street' nears 1 billion views on YouTube

NEW YORK (AP) ? Nearing 1 billion views on YouTube, "Sesame Street" is headed for Justin Bieber territory.

The children's program is closing in on the kind of rarified digital milestone usually reserved for the likes of pop stars and cat videos. "Sesame Street" will soon pass 1 billion views on YouTube and it's celebrating the mark with a campaign to put itself over the hump.

"Sesame Street" on Thursday will post a video featuring the character Telly Monster, urging viewers to click the show past the final 20 million views and unlock a "top secret video." Naturally, for the nonprofit children's series, it's a teaching moment, too. Don't be surprised if Count von Count shows up to ponder such a big number.

For "Sesame Street," the milestone ? a first on YouTube for a nonprofit or U.S. children's media outlet ? reflects the increasingly multimedia nature of kid entertainment. Big Bird and Oscar the Grouch are now about as likely to be watched on an iPad, phone or laptop as they are on PBS.

"We have this theory that if we get content on multiple platforms and devices, it gives kids and families a chance to reinforce and experience the curriculum multiple times," says Terry Fitzpatrick, executive vice president of content and distribution for Sesame Workshop, who emphasizes videos are best co-viewed with child and parent. "It blows me away to think about how popular and strong a platform (YouTube) has become for us."

"Sesame Street," a mainstay on PBS since 1970, launched its YouTube channel in 2006, but has continually expanded its mindfulness of online and mobile viewers.

Sesame Workshop last year integrated its digital media group into its TV production, so that digital and interactive elements are considered from the start of an idea. Its most popular video is "Elmo's Song," which has been watched nearly 86 million times since being uploaded in 2009. More recently, another PBS hit, "Downton Abbey," was parodied in "Upside Downton Abbey," a video where British muppets have trouble drinking tea and eating crumpets because, well, they're upside down.

Caitlin Hendrickson, strategic partner manager for YouTube's educational realm, YouTube EDU, says that education is one of the fastest growing content categories on the Google Inc.-owned site. "Sesame Street" reaching 1 billion views, she said in a statement, "is proof of their outstanding leadership in this space and their creative use of YouTube."

Pentagon creates new medal for cyber, drone wars

WASHINGTON (AP) ? They fight the war from computer consoles and video screens.

But the troops that launch the drone strikes and direct the cyberattacks that can kill or disable an enemy may never set foot in the combat zone. Now their battlefield contributions may be recognized.

Defense Secretary Leon Panetta announced Wednesday that for the first time the Pentagon is creating a medal that can be awarded to troops who have a direct impact on combat operations, but do it from afar.

"I've seen firsthand how modern tools, like remotely piloted platforms and cyber systems, have changed the way wars are fought," Panetta said. "And they've given our men and women the ability to engage the enemy and change the course of battle, even from afar."

The work they do "does contribute to the success of combat operations, particularly when they remove the enemy from the field of battle, even if those actions are physically removed from the fight," he said.

The new blue, red and white-ribboned Distinguished Warfare Medal will be awarded to individuals for "extraordinary achievement" related to a military operation that occurred after Sept. 11, 2001. But unlike other combat medals, it does not require the recipient risk his or her life to get it.

Officials said the new medal will be the first combat-related award to be created since the Bronze Star in 1944.

A recognition of the evolving 21st Century warfare, the medal will be considered a bit higher in ranking than the Bronze Star, but is lower than the Silver Star, defense officials said.

The Bronze Star is the fourth highest combat decoration and rewards meritorious service in battle, while the Silver Star is the third highest combat award given for bravery. Several other awards, including the Defense Distinguished Service Medal, are also ranked higher, but are not awarded for combat.

Over the last decade of war, remotely-piloted Predators and Reapers have become a critical weapon to both gather intelligence and conduct airstrikes against terrorist or insurgents around the world. They have been used extensively on the battlefields in Iraq and Afghanistan, as well as in strikes in Pakistan, Yemen and northern Africa.

Over the same time, cyberattacks have become a growing national security threat, with Panetta and others warning that the next Pearl Harbor could well be a computer-based assault.

The Pentagon does not publicly discuss its offensive cyber operations or acts of cyberwarfare. Considering that secrecy, it's not clear how public such awards might be in the future. The federal government, for example, launched a broad leak investigation after reports surfaced that the U.S. and Israel may have been responsible for the Stuxnet computer virus that attacked computers in Iran's main nuclear enrichment facilities.

According to the Pentagon criteria, the medal gives the military a way to recognize a single act that directly affects a combat operation, doesn't involve an act of valor, and warrants an award higher than the Bronze Star.

"The extraordinary achievement must have resulted in an accomplishment so exceptional and outstanding as to clearly set the individual apart from comrades or from other persons in similar situations," according to the Pentagon's list of criteria for the medal. It could include the "hands-on" but remote launching of a weapon and could specifically include efforts in space or cyberspace.

The medal is a brass pendant, nearly two inches tall, with a laurel wreath that circles a globe. There is an eagle in the center. The ribbon has blue, red and white stripes.

Misogyny behind the Great Firewall: China's online gamers need to ...

      China

Warning: This story contains images that may not be safe for your workplace.

Last week, I wrote up a story about a World of Warcraft player who caused a bit of a ruckus online after sleeping with some female guild members ?for the alliance.? As I wrote at the time, the news instigated a bit of a discussion about female gamers on Chinese news sites, and many of the comments that arose were pretty disgusting and objectifying. One gamer, for example, said that it was OK to treat females in games as though they were prostitutes.

Unfortunately, I wasn?t particularly surprised to see that. I see comments like it fairly often when this topic comes up. Moreover, it?s no surprise that some Chinese gamers have a tendency to objectify women when Chinese gaming news sites are often quasi-pornographic. Take, for example, the photo spread below, which is on the front page of Netease Games, one of China?s biggest gaming portals. None of these images are actually pornographic, but a few are so close that I?ve pixellated them a bit for the sake of our readers who may be at work:

      China's gaming problem

Now, some of these girls are ostensibly somewhat connected to gaming in that they?re wearing the costumes of popular game characters, but let?s be honest ? that?s a pretty thin excuse for plastering pin-up babes across your front page every day. And while the Western gaming community has plenty of issues when it comes to sexism, it doesn?t seem to be necessary to sell gaming news this way in the West. The front pages of sites like Kotaku and Joystiq are not consistently plastered with half-naked babes.

But as a relative outsider, I wondered if I was missing something, so I put the question to a couple of insiders in China?s game industry. To ensure their candor, I have promised not to reveal their names or the companies they work for, but both of them are high-level folks who have been in the industry for a long time and who work for Chinese gaming companies you?ve definitely heard of before. For now, let?s just call them ?Mal? and ?Zoe.?

When I asked about the images of women that are plastered all over gaming sites, Mal told me:

In the Chinese game market, most of the gamers are male users, therefore beautiful girls are always one of the most efficient ways to promote the game as a model of a poster or in some promotional activities. We have some statistics that show that the online ads with girls will attract more clicks from the gamers compared with other content, in general circumstances. Under the consideration of effectiveness on advertising, most games like to use girls in ad campaigns, even not all but for some of them.

However I believe the execution will be a key to determine whether this kind of ?creativity? is ?crossing the line? or not. For example, some games would use more proper ways to ?package? girls in the marketing activities such as beauty contest, girl guilds, beautiful girl gamers, etc. instead of being very direct to the ?sexism?. I guess the game companies need to have this ?line? within their own marketing activities so that ensure the campaign won?t be going to the negative area.

Zoe told me practically the exact same thing:

Because most gamers are guys, using pretty girls to sell things has always been popular, because they attract eyeballs. This is also popular in other industries, like cars and electronics. But especially with browser games, users can click an ad and log in or even be making a payment instantly, so pretty girls in ads are extremely effective. There?s also too little oversight in the area of browser games so some usage of pretty girls is quite shameless and vulgar.

When I was setting up the marketing system at [major gaming company redacted], we limited how girls could be used in marketing so that it never came to anything too scandalous or pornographic. But you can?t ignore what the users want either, as long as it?s appropriate.

That sex sells is certainly not new, but to be frank I?m not sure I completely buy this argument. After all, Chinese tech news sites like the ones we read every day also have a very male-dominated readership (and probably a lot of overlap with the gaming sites? readership), but sites like TechWeb and Sina Tech aren?t plastered with pinups.

?Zoe? explained it to me like this:

I think gamers and marketing firms aren?t intentionally being sexist towards women, but they also haven?t thought [seriously] about respecting women either.

That strikes me as pretty accurate. In the threads about that World of Warcraft gamer, for example, many of the sexist comments I noticed came from gamers who felt they were defending the girls but were actually perpetuating the all-too-common double standard that says it?s OK for men to sleep around but women are either chaste or whores.

As I said, this isn?t really a China-specific problem, although China?s gaming sites are much more pornographic than any of the Western gaming sites I frequent. But as casual gaming catches on in China and more and more girls get into gaming, could the problem more or less solve itself as male Chinese gamers realize that females who play games are just regular women and not weird or abnormal in some way? Possibly, said Mal, but don?t count on it:

I would say if there are more and more games developed for girl/female users launched in China (such as casual games), that might be changed as the game companies needs to think more about the female users. However since [most] existing games are more male-oriented, and the statistics show that the male users are still the major revenue contributors for online games, I am afraid this kind of situation will continue for a while.

National Intelligence Estimate: China Systematically Hacking U.S. Companies

The 2013 National Intelligence Estimate, released on Sunday, claims China is engaged in a massive, sustained cyber-espionage campaign against American businesses and institutions for economic gain. According to the Washington Post's Ellen Nakashima, nearly every sector of the American economy is being targeted by Chinese hackers, including energy, finance, information technology, aerospace, and automotives. Outside experts estimate business losses from hacking attacks in the tens of billions of dollars.

China, however, is not the only country engaged in systematic hacking for economic gain. The new National Intelligence Estimate also claims Russia, Israel, and France are also involved in hacking for economic intelligence--but at a far lesser scale than China. There is ongoing talk of a "cyberdraft" that would put information assurance experts under U.S. government control during critical wartime periods, and the Pentagon recently announced that 4,000 new employees would be hired for Cyber Command--a massive manpower boost during a period of Defense Department belt-tightening. The other week, of course, news came out that Chinese hackers systematically penetrated the New York Times and Wall Street Journal.

Building a biochemistry lab on a chip

Feb. 12, 2013 ? Miniaturized laboratory-on-chip systems promise rapid, sensitive, and multiplexed detection of biological samples for medical diagnostics, drug discovery, and high-throughput screening. Using micro-fabrication techniques and incorporating a unique design of transistor-based heating, researchers at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign are further advancing the use of silicon transistor and electronics into chemistry and biology for point-of-care diagnostics.

Cross-section of device with a droplet. The left side shows an unheated droplet with the DNA FRET construct in the double-stranded form. The right side shows a heated droplet where the FRET construct has denatured, resulting in an increase in fluorescence.

Lab-on-a-chip technologies are attractive as they require fewer reagents, have lower detection limits, allow for parallel analyses, and can have a smaller footprint.

"Integration of various laboratory functions onto microchips has been intensely studied for many years," explained Rashid Bashir, an Abel Bliss Professor of electrical and computer engineering and of bioengineering at Illinois. "Further advances of these technologies require the ability to integrate additional elements, such as the miniaturized heating element, and the ability to integrate heating elements in a massively parallel format compatible with silicon technology.

"In this work, we demonstrated that we can heat nanoliter volume droplets, individually and in an array, using VLSI silicon based devices, up to temperatures that make it interesting to do various biochemical reactions within these droplets."

"Our method positions droplets on an array of individual silicon microwave heaters on chip to precisely control the temperature of droplets-in-air, allowing us to perform biochemical reactions, including DNA melting and detection of single base mismatches," said Eric Salm, first author of the paper, "Ultralocalized thermal reactions in subnanoliter droplets-in-air," published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Science (PNAS) on February 12.

According to Salm, approaches to perform localized heating of these individual subnanoliter droplets can allow for new applications that require parallel, time-, and space multiplex reactions on a single integrated circuit. Within miniaturized laboratory-on-chips, static and dynamic droplets of fluids in different immiscible media have been used as individual vessels to perform biochemical reactions and confine the products.

"This technology makes it possible to do cell lysing and nucleic acid amplification reactions within these individual droplets -- the droplets are the reaction vessels or cuvettes that can be individually heated," Salm added.

"We also demonstrate that ssDNA probe molecules can be placed on heaters in solution, dried, and then rehydrated by ssDNA target molecules in droplets for hybridization and detection," said Bashir, who is director of the Micro and Nanotechnology Laboratory at Illinois. "This platform enables many applications in droplets including hybridization of low copy number DNA molecules, lysing of single cells, interrogation of ligand-receptor interactions, and rapid temperature cycling for amplification of DNA molecules.

"Notably," Bashir added, "our miniaturized heater could also function as dual heater/sensor elements, as these silicon-on-insulator nanowire or nanoribbon structures have been used to detect DNA, proteins, pH, and pyrophosphates.

By using microfabrication techniques and incorporating the unique design of transistor-based heating with individual reaction volumes, 'laboratory-on-a-chip' technologies can be scaled down to 'laboratory-on-a-transistor' technologies as sensor/heater hybrids that could be used for point-of-care diagnostics."

In addition to Salm and Bashir, co-authors of the study included Carlos Duarte Guevara, Piyush Dak, Brian Ross Dorvel, and Bobby Reddy, Jr. at the University of Illinois; and Muhammad Ashraf Alam, Birck Nanotechnology Center and the School of Electrical and Computer Engineering at Purdue University.

Strategy is crucial for business travellers - e-Travel Blackboard

Corporate travel continues to grow in 2013.?

      ?
      ?

New research suggests corporate business travel buying will grow and ?become increasingly strategic? in 2013.

Travelscene Corporate released findings from their latest national survey, with 50 percent of respondents stating their business travel will increase compared with 2012.

Only 19 percent of respondents predicted a decrease in corporate travel.

?Sentiment is high and this is a promising start for 2013 for the corporate travel industry and TMCs,? Travelscene Corporate general manager David Padman said.

?We?re expecting business travel buying to become increasingly strategic this year, with a stronger focus on mobility, procurement and increased use of technologies.?

In a separate survey, 46 percent of respondents said they had no corporate travel policies in place, while 30 percent said they made reviews once every two years and 23 percent reviewing business travel 1-2+ times per year.

?It is important that businesses take into account the new options available, and review their corporate travel policies to ensure work is balanced across the board,? Mr Padman said.

Travelscene Corporate is also encouraging business travellers to explore all avenues that may add value.

?Being ?connected? 24/7 is now mandatory, and is an example of technological advances that are shifting the business landscape for travellers,? Mr Padman said.?

Roger Ailes Hopes To Grow Latino Audience For Fox News

Just as Republicans are soul-searching following the decisive electoral defeat in November that highlighted the country?s shifting demographics, Fox News, the party?s preferred cable news network, is looking inward amid record declines in ratings and credibility.

On Thursday, Politico?s Mike Allen and Jim VandeHei described both the party and network as "moving to purge the controversial political creatures they created." So far, Fox News has opted not to renew the contracts of commentators Dick Morris or Sarah Palin, while bringing over from CNN Erick Erickson, editor of RedState and a prominent voice among grassroots conservatives.

But aside from swapping on-air political analysts, how does Fox News ?- which hitched its wagon to Glenn Beck and the Tea Party at the beginning of President Obama?s first term -- deal with the president's second-term agenda?

For starters, Fox News chief Roger Ailes appears to be trying to change perceptions that his network is hostile toward undocumented immigrants and hopes to increasingly draw Latino viewers, a key voting bloc that swung overwhelming toward Obama in November.

?The fact is, we have a lot -- Republicans have a lot more opportunity for [Latinos],? Ailes told The New Republic?s Eliza Gray, in an article published in the magazine's latest issue and appearing online Monday. ?If I?m going to risk my life to run over the fence to get into America, I want to win. I think Fox News will articulate that.?

Ailes also told Gray that ?the contributions being made by Latinos are extraordinary, and we need to talk about them,? while suggesting the ?Latino audience is an essentially traditional audience and will go to Fox News for traditional American values." And then there?s the term ?illegal immigration,? which Ailes, a former adviser to three Republican presidents, thinks the party should veer away from:

?I think the word 'illegal immigration' is a false name,? he continues. ?You are talking about two separate issues. One is sovereignty. ... The media trying to make America feel guilty because we want borders?that, to me, is complete bullshit. Immigration is a separate issue. ... ?We should all defend sovereignty, then take a Judeo-Christian approach to immigration. I don?t have any problem with a path to citizenship.??

Gray points out that Ailes may still need to convince some of his biggest stars that describing people as ?illegal aliens? or ?illegals? when covering the immigration debate could be a hindrance to drawing Latino viewers.

While Sean Hannity famously shifted his position on immigration less than 48 hours after Mitt Romney's defeat, the primetime host told Gray: ?I?ve used 'illegals' all these years I?ve been on TV. ... I don?t see it as an offensive term.?

Meanwhile, the network's Fox News Latino and and Fox Nation websites sometimes frame the same immigration article in completely different ways, showing that there's work to do before everyone's on the same page.
