A Whopper to go with the casket, please

David S. Kime Jr. was many things. World War II veteran. Purple Heart recipient. Father. Grandfather. Husband. And, it should be noted, Burger King enthusiast.

The 88-year-old Kime died Jan. 20, and during his funeral procession a few days later, members of Kime's family took a detour to the Burger King drive-through.

Linda Phiel, one of Kime's three daughters, said her dad loved fast food and ate it daily. "He always lived by his own rules," she said. "His version of eating healthy was the lettuce on the Whopper Jr."

The York (Pa.) Daily Record spoke with Phiel, who explained that when her mother was alive, she tried to keep his eating habits in check. "When she died, for a while, he would eat with us," she said. "But he considered us health freaks because we ate things that were green, like broccoli."

After a while, Phiel stopped trying to talk her dad into eating more veggies. "When you're 88 years old, I guess you've earned the right to do what you want to do," she said.

The funeral procession ordered a whopping 40 of the Whopper Jr. burgers, including one for the dearly departed. Kime's Whopper was placed on top of his casket before burial.

The Burger King's manager, Margaret Hess, said, "It's nice to know he was a loyal customer up until the end?the very end."

Ajith speaks about Society, Politics and Democracy

unseen billa2 ajith 3 Ajith speaks about Society, Politics and Democracy

The constitution of India declares India as a Sovereign, Socialist, Secular, Democratic republic assuring its citizens of justice, equality and liberty. Trend of the day is all the words have been cliched, misunderstood and misconstrued.

Secularism ? a system of political or social philosophy that rejects all forms of religious faith and worship. Is India a Secular nation or being played on the basis of vote bank politics.

Democracy and Secularism are being misunderstood as cliched words that are just adjectives for our nation. Time we lend our ears to the actual values that the country lives for.

Ajith has come out with a scathing statement questioning the state of democracy in the country. He believes that words like sovereign, socialist, secular, democratic are grossly misunderstood and misconstrued in the current scenario.

He wondered if India is really a secular country what with the vote bank style of politics, which is in vogue today. This statement comes in the wake of recent events where Kamal Hassan?s Vishwaroopam is being prevented from releasing in Tamil Nadu by certain Muslim political outfits.

Ajith feels it?s high time that we subscribed to the country?s actual values of justice, equality and liberty to all. The star has minced no words and made his disappointment clear.

Moon Swoon: How 2013's Full Moons Got Their Peculiar Names

The first full moon of 2013 will light up the night sky tonight (Jan. 26), but did you know it's a full moon of many names?

Full moon names date back to Native American tribes of a few hundred years ago who lived in what is now the northern and eastern United States. Those tribes kept track of the seasons by giving distinctive names to each recurring full moon. Their names were applied to the entire month in which each occurred.

There were some variations in the moon names, but, in general, the same ones were used throughout the Algonquin tribes from New England on west to Lake Superior. European settlers followed their own customs and created some of their own names. Since the lunar (or "synodic") month is roughly 29.5 days in length on average, the dates of the full moon shift from year to year.

Here is a listing of all of the full moon names, as well as the dates and times for 2013. Unless otherwise noted, all times are for the Eastern time zone:

Jan. 26, 11:38 p.m. EST ?Full Wolf Moon: Amid the zero cold and deep snows of midwinter, the wolf packs howled hungrily outside Indian villages.? It was also known as the Old Moon or the Moon after Yule.? In some tribes this was the Full Snow Moon; most applied that name to the next moon. [Full Moon: Why Does It Happen? (Video)]

Feb. 25, 3:26 p.m. EST ?Full Snow Moon: Usually the heaviest snows fall in this month. Hunting becomes very difficult, and, hence, to some tribes this was the Full Hunger Moon.?

March 27, 5:27 a.m. EDT ?Full Worm Moon: In this month the ground softens and the earthworm casts reappear, inviting the return of the robins. The more northern tribes knew this as the Full Crow Moon, when the cawing of crows signals the end of winter, or the Full Crust Moon, because the snow cover becomes crusted from thawing by day and freezing at night. TheFull Sap Moon, marking the time of tapping maple trees, is another variation. [Phases of the Moon in 2013: A Lunar Calendar]

In 2013, this is also the Paschal Full Moon? the first full moon of the spring season. The first Sunday following the paschal moon is Easter Sunday, which indeed will be observed four days later on Sunday, March 31.

April 25, 3:57 p.m. EDT ?Full Pink Moon: The grass pink or wild phlox is one of the earliest widespread flowers of the spring. Other names were the Full Sprouting Grass Moon, the Egg Moon and ? among coastal tribes ? the Full Fish Moon, when the shad come upstream to spawn. The moon will also undergo a very slight partial lunar eclipse, which will be visible from the Eastern Hemisphere, but not from North America. At its peak, less than 1.5 percent of the moon's diameter will be immersed in the Earth?s umbral shadow; a very underwhelming event to say the least.

May 25, 12:25 a.m. EDT ?Full Flower Moon: Flowers are now abundant everywhere. It was also known as the Full Corn Planting Moon or the Milk Moon. The moon will also undergo a penumbral lunar eclipse, but the passage of the moon's disk into the Earth's shadow will result in one of the slightest eclipses of all, administering a mere touch of penumbral shadow at the northernmost part of the lunar limb.

June 23, 7:32 a.m. EDT ?Full Strawberry Moon: Strawberry-picking season peaks during this month.? Europeans called this the Rose Moon. The moon will also arrive at perigee only 32 minutes earlier, at 7 a.m. EDT at a distance of 221,824 miles (356,991 kilometers) from Earth. So this is the biggest full moon of 2013. Very high ocean tides can be expected during the next two or three days, thanks to the coincidence of perigee with the full moon.?

July 22, 2:16 p.m. EDT?Full Buck Moon: Named for when the new antlers of buck deer push out from their foreheads in coatings of velvety fur. It was also often called the Full Thunder Moon, thunderstorms now being most frequent. Sometimes it's also called the Full Hay Moon.

Aug. 20, 9:45 p.m. EDT ?Full Sturgeon Moon: This large fish of the Great Lakes and other major bodies of water like Lake Champlain is most readily caught at this time. A few tribes knew it as the Full Red Moon, because when the moon rises it looks reddish through a sultry haze. It was also known as ?the Green Corn Moon or Grain Moon.

Sept. 19, 7:13 a.m. EDT ?Full Harvest Moon: Traditionally, this designation goes to the full moon that occurs closest to the autumnal (fall) equinox. The Harvest Moon usually comes in September, but (on average) once or twice a decade it will fall in early October.? At the peak of the harvest, farmers can work into the night by the light of this moon.?

Usually the moon rises an average of 50 minutes later each night, but for the few nights around the Harvest Moon, the moon seems to rise at nearly the same time each night: just 25 to 30 minutes later across the U.S., and only 10 to 20 minutes later for much of Canada and Europe. Corn, pumpkins, squash, beans and wild rice ? the chief Indian staples ? are now ready for gathering.

Oct. 18, 7:38 p.m. EDT ?Full Hunters' Moon: With the leaves falling and the deer fattened, it's now time to hunt.? Since the fields have been reaped, hunters can ride over the stubble, and can more easily see the fox, as well as other animals, which can be caught for a thanksgiving banquet after the harvest.?

A penumbral lunar eclipse will also take place. Perhaps for some minutes centered on the time of greatest eclipse (7:50 p.m. EDT) might the penumbra be marginally detectable over the moon?s southernmost limb; for at that moment the penumbral magnitude will reach 76.5 percent.? Those living across the eastern half of North America might see some evidence of this faint penumbral shading soon after local moonrise.

Nov. 17, 10:16 a.m. EST ?Full Beaver Moon: At this point of the year, it's time to set beaver traps before the swamps freeze to ensure a supply of warm winter furs. Another interpretation suggests that the name Beaver Full Moon came from the fact that the beavers are now active in their preparation for winter. It's also called the Frosty Moon.

Dec. 17, 4:28 a.m. EST ?Full Cold Moon: On occasion, this moon was also called the Moon Before Yule. December is also the month the winter cold fastens its grip. Sometimes this moon is referred to as the Full Long Nights Moon and the term "Long Night" Moon is a very appropriate name because the nights are now indeed long and the moon is above the horizon a long time. This particular full moon makes its highest arc across the night sky because it's diametrically opposite to the low sun.?

Editor's note:?If you have an amazing picture of the full moon or any other night sky view that?you'd like to share for a possible story or image gallery, send photos, comments and your name and location to managing editor Tariq Malik at?spacephotos@space.com.

Dream Designer Kitchens for 2013 ? UK Home Improvement Blog

2013 is shaping up to be an extra special year for modern kitchen design, with several new and exciting philosophies entering the arena.

With the economy still flatlining, without any sign of recovery, homeowners have started to seek longevity in their kitchens, resulting in neutral finishes for stand out features like cabinetry, worktops and flooring.

Cleaner styles of cabinetry are the order of the day, along with a growing interest in open floor plans.

Currently, there?s a huge emphasis on ?the social kitchen?, as well as the concept of design sustainability and healthy cooking.

And, with an increasing interest in cooking as a pastime, induction hobs are also becoming a regular feature of modern kitchens.

So, with these trends in mind, what should you think about when designing lovely new modern kitchens?

1. Convenience

Although people revamp their kitchens for a variety of reasons, greater functionality is often why people finally decide to take the plunge.
Something to keep in the back of your mind is the importance of high performance appliances as well as a design that makes your kitchen easy to use and move around in.

Ideally, it should accommodate multiple chefs, entertaining guests, and social cooking.

This is why central islands have risen in popularity so rapidly in modern kitchens ? give it some thought.

2. Cabinetry

If there?s one thing you really should splash out on, it?s cabinetry.

Why? Because cabinets are used so frequently and made from wood, so they need to resist wear and tear more than other features.

Let?s face it ? low-end cabinetry is a gamble. Invest in cabinets that are mid to high end of the market or you?ll be sorry.

3. Neutral colours and dark finishes

Your pre-conceived notions of dark, rich wood are no longer relevant for modern kitchens I?m afraid.

It?s better to think about shades like birch and bamboo in, for more neutral colours, to give your kitchen an extended shelf life.

Greys, whites, blacks and other neutral colours are also fine and will work very well with worktops.

4. Energy

These days, you can save money on bills without losing the aesthetic value.

Using LED lighting under cabinets and over worktops will really enhance your kitchen.

Roleplayers Wanted; Post Fallout RP

So, I've been wanting to do some sort of post apocalypse/fallout sort of roleplay for a while. I don't have any sort of story planed out yet, but I'm willing to work with people to create a story. Just shoot ideas at me and we can talk about getting a plot going.

Some ideas I've thought of:

  • Gangs/Tribes
  • Some sort of monsters that have been created due to after effects of the apocalypse
  • Bits of people rebuilding can be found

Johny Vincent: Well hello, Gord. Seems like you've been messin' where you ought not.
Gord: No... cousins are legal. Oh... you mean Lola.

Teaming Up To Fight Childhood Obesity | Your Health Journal

From Your Health Journal?..?Another great article from the Observer and Eccentric today about fighting childhood obesity in Michigan by Lonnie Huhman. On a personal note, I am always impressed with the state of Michigan and their commitment to fighting childhood obesity. I have teamed up with the Michigan Fitness Foundation in the past, and they are an outstanding organization that sets good examples through their hard work and commitment to children in their state. Also, the Michigan Blue Cross and Blue Shield is another great organization in Michigan that gets things done. So, when I saw this article, I was not surprised to read more success stories from the state of Michigan. Please take the time to visit the Observer and Eccentric site (link provided below) to read the complete article.?

From the article?..

Detroit Red Wings Foundation, Blue Cross Blue Shield of Michigan and Kroger join forces

Lieutenant Governor Brian Calley couldn?t score a goal on Novi Woods fourth-grader Duncan Lowes, but he did record a helpful assist to a program aiming to curb childhood obesity.

Calley was at the Novi Kroger store last week to help launch a program ? developed by the Detroit Red Wings Foundation, Blue Cross Blue Shield of Michigan and The Kroger Co. of Michigan ? to bring awareness to childhood obesity.

?This is a serious issue facing us,? Calley said before a gathered crowd of kids and parents at the Kroger on Grand River Avenue.

He cited the growing number of obese children as one of the biggest health concerns in the state. However, he said this effort is an exciting development that should help reduce the numbers, and added it will be helped by working together.

?The key for its success is its partnerships,? he said of the program.

For the launch, Kroger hosted students from Novi Woods Elementary School as well as their parents. The students participated in a hockey activity, learned about nutrition and sampled some kid-friendly healthy food recipes.

The idea came from the Pure Michigan FIT initiative, which started last year. It provides tools and resources for Michigan families to incorporate healthy eating habits and physical activity into their lifestyles.

Besides Calley, remarks were given by representatives from each partner, and each expressed their wholehearted support.

USDA studies confirm plant water demands shift with water availability

USDA studies confirm plant water demands shift with water availability [ Back to EurekAlert! ] Public release date: 22-Jan-2013

WASHINGTON, January 22, 2012Plants can adapt to extreme shifts in water availability, such as drought and flooding, but their ability to withstand these extreme patterns will be tested by future climate change, according to a study by U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) scientists and their cooperators.

The study was published this week in Nature by a team of Agricultural Research Service (ARS) scientists led by Guillermo Ponce Campos and Susan Moran and an Australian team led by Alfredo Huete from the University of Technology, Sydney (UTS). This research included contributions from nine other ARS scientists, four U.S. Forest Service scientists, and colleagues from the University of Arizona, the University of California-Irvine, and UTS. ARS is USDA's chief intramural scientific research agency, and this research supports the USDA priority of responding to climate change.

"In the United States, much of our agricultural productivity has depended on long-term precipitation regimes. But those patterns are changing and we need information for managing the effects of those shifts," said ARS Administrator Edward B. Knipling. "These findings can help managers respond to the challenges of global climate change with effective strategies for maintaining agricultural productivity."

The researchers conducted their investigation using measurements made during 2000-2009 at 29 sites in the United States, Puerto Rico, and Australia. This provided data about precipitation patterns in environments ranging from grasslands to forests. Globally, the 2000-2009 decade ranked as the 10 warmest years of the 130-year (1880-2009) record. The team compared these data with measurements taken from 1975 to 1998 at 14 sites in North America, Central America, and South America.

To calculate ecosystem water use, the scientists used satellite observations to approximate aboveground net plant productivity at each site. Then they combined these approximations with field data of precipitation and estimates of plant water loss to generate indicators of plant water use efficiency.

The researchers observed that ecosystem water-use efficiency increased in the driest years and decreased in the wettest years. This suggests that plant water demand fluctuated in accordance with water availability and that there is a cross-community capacity for tolerating low precipitation and responding to high precipitation during periods of warm drought.

However, the team observed that the water-use efficiency data exhibited a trend of "diminishing returns." This suggests plant communities will eventually approach a water-use efficiency threshold that will disrupt plant water use and severely limit plant production when drought is prolonged.

The scientists also used the data to develop predictions about future plant response to climate changes. Their results suggest that ecosystem resilience will decline as regions are subjected to continuing warming and drying trends. They project that this downturn will begin in grassland biomes because these plant communities are particularly sensitive to the hot and dry conditions of prolonged warm droughts.

This work can help resource managers develop agricultural production strategies that incorporate changes in water availability linked to changing precipitation patterns.

Cost, need play into insurance decisions | GoErie.com/Erie Times ...

Insurance is not only a fundamental part of most consumers' financial lives, it's also among the most confusing.

Here are answers to basic questions frequently asked by consumers.

Q How much life insurance do I need?

A At its simplest, life insurance is a paycheck replacement if you die. In determining how much coverage you need, you're trying to answer two questions: "Who relies on my paycheck and would suffer financial hardship if I died?" and "How much money would they be missing because I'm not working?"

Single, childless people who have nobody relying on their income might decide they need no life insurance.

A single breadwinner in a young family of five might need a policy worth hundreds of thousands of dollars, even millions.

Q While traveling, should I buy rental-car insurance?

A Probably not, if you already have auto insurance with collision and comprehensive coverage, which refers to noncollision events, such as theft, fire or vandalism. The rental-car insurance could be a waste of money.

To best answer this question, make two phone calls -- to your auto agent and to the issuer of the credit card you will use to pay for the rental. Both are likely to include some coverage for use of a rental car.

Q How do I choose the right deductibles?

A The simple answer is to choose auto and home insurance deductibles as high as you can stand. A deductible is the amount of money you have to pay before your insurance kicks in. If you opt for a higher deductible, your premiums will be lower, but you'll have bigger out-of-pocket expenses if you have a claim.

Q Should I buy term life insurance or permanent insurance?

A In short, buy term life insurance and only buy pricey permanent insurance -- whole life, universal life and variable life -- if you fully understand the policy, its costs, its rate of return and exactly why you need it instead of term life insurance. That alone will dissuade most people because permanent policies are so complicated.

By contrast, term life insurance is relatively easy to understand. It pays your beneficiaries a lump sum if you die during the term, typically 10, 20 or 30 years. There's no investment component.

Q Who needs renters insurance?

A Renters insurance typically covers your personal belongings against damage and theft and provides some liability coverage if someone is injured in your apartment.

Fortunately, renters insurance is fairly cheap, often in the ballpark of $16 per month. Yet only 31 percent of renters buy it, according to the Insurance Information Institute.

Q Should I buy life insurance for a child?

A The typical answer is no. Not only is the probability of a child dying remote, but your household doesn't rely on a child's income and would not suffer financially because a child died -- outside funeral and burial expenses.

You could consider a small policy to reimburse yourself for funeral expenses, but get the proper amount of life insurance on the family's breadwinners as a higher priority

Obama urges action to tackle gun violence

WASHINGTON (AP) ? President Barack Obama is urging Americans to press Congress to support his proposals to tackle gun violence.

As he begins his second term, the president says in his weekly radio and Internet address that Americans should ask lawmakers why a good rating from the gun lobby is more important than keeping kids safe. He's referring to the powerful National Rifle Association, which opposes his new gun proposals.

The president says he's taking steps right away but Congress also must act. He's asking lawmakers to pass an assault-weapons ban, universal background checks and limits on high-capacity ammunition magazines.

In the Republican address, Oklahoma Rep. James Lankford is focusing on financial matters. He says any budget Congress approves must address government spending and debt.

Panetta defends Obama's gun control package

(AP) ? Defense Secretary Leon Panetta fired off a strong defense of gun control legislation Thursday, in front of a decidedly skeptical audience.

Speaking to about 150 members of the 173rd Airborne Brigade Combat Team, Panetta said steps can be taken to protect kids in school without undermining the Second Amendment.

"Who the hell needs armor-piercing bullets except you guys in battle?" Panetta told the soldiers at the U.S. Army Garrison Vicenza in northern Italy. "For the life of me, I don't know why the hell people have to have assault weapons."

Panetta, who said he believes in the Second Amendment and has been a longtime duck hunter, was asked about the issue by a soldier who wanted to know what steps the Obama administration was going to take to deal with attacks in schools that "don't have to do with tearing apart our Second Amendment."

Known for his often blunt and colorful language, Panetta added that things can be done to protect children "so that the nuts that are out there won't use these kinds of weapons to wipe them out."

President Barack Obama's sweeping gun control package includes calls for a ban on assault weapons and a universal requirement for background checks on gun purchases.

UMass named Florida professor engineering dean

The University of Massachusetts has named a longtime professor at the University of Florida as the Amherst campus' new engineering dean.

UMass announced Thursday that Tim Anderson has been selected to lead the College of Engineering, effective March 1.

Anderson has been on Florida's faculty since 1978 and his research focuses on electronic materials processing. He is a fellow of the American Institute of Chemical Engineers and the American Society of Engineering Education.

He is also the director of the Florida Energy Systems Consortium, a collaboration among the state's public universities to conduct energy research, education and outreach.

Anderson said he was drawn to UMass by its "well-deserved reputation for excellence in education and scholarly activities."

UMass Provost James Staros called Anderson a "leader in both engineering research and education."

Irish cellphone entrepreneur banks on a smarter Haiti

PORT-AU-PRINCE (Reuters) - When Irish billionaire Denis O'Brien set about building a cellphone company in the western hemisphere's poorest country, there was no shortage of skeptics.

Six years later O'Brien's company Digicel is the largest private investor in Haiti and has 4.8 million users, about half the population. It is a rare beacon of entrepreneurship in a country still struggling to rebuild after the 2010 earthquake.

O'Brien's ambitious plans for Digicel are part of his bullish vision for Haiti which stands in sharp contrast to the usually gloomy forecasts for a nation crippled by perpetual political turmoil and natural disasters.

Promotion of homegrown entrepreneurship is rare in Haiti, where the government and banks have done little to stimulate investment and a small business elite has traditionally profited from import monopolies that stifle local production.

On a typical whirlwind visit shortly before Christmas, O'Brien, 54, flew into Haiti from New York on his corporate jet for a monthly Digicel board meeting. He then hosted a gala celebrating Digicel's 'Entrepreneur of the Year', a televised event he imported from Ireland to inspire small business.

Six feet tall with white hair and ruddy cheeks, O'Brien is easy to spot among the crowd of mostly local business people and dignitaries, including President Michel Martelly.

"Haiti needs more people like you," Martelly said. "If it wasn't for Denis, we'd all be sitting here alone."

PHONES FOR THE POOR

The Digicel Group is a privately-held company founded by O'Brien in 2001 and headquartered in Jamaica, with 13 million customers in 31 emerging markets, mostly in the Caribbean and Pacific regions.

O'Brien holds 94 percent of Digicel shares and made Forbes' billionaires list last year (No. 205) with a net worth of $5 billion. He models himself on Sudanese-born British billionaire Mo Ibrahim, founder of Celtel, an Africa-wide cellphone network, and India-based Sunil Mittal, founder of Bharti Airtel.

Ibrahim sold Celtel in 2005 for $3.4 billion and now runs the Mo Ibrahim Foundation to encourage better governance in Africa, while Mittal also runs his own foundation.

"They proved the concept that you can have people with very little disposable income in real terms, but who want a phone and they'll pay you for it, and you can afford to build up quite a large network," O'Brien told Reuters.

Digicel is now looking to enter Myanmar, a country of around 60 million people that has one of the lowest mobile penetration rates in the world, with only 3 percent of the population owning a phone in 2011, according to the World Bank.

Digicel says it had revenue of about $2.5 billion in the year to March 2012, with Haiti leading the way, generating $439 million.

Digicel's 2006 launch in Haiti was a rare example of foreign investment in a country more used to dependence on foreign aid handouts. Digicel's shiny headquarters was inaugurated a year before the 2010 quake and was one of the few big buildings to withstand it virtually intact.

Two existing cellphone companies which offered spotty, more expensive services were quickly overtaken as Digicel invested in a national infrastructure and offered handsets for as little as $7 with low rates for its mostly pre-paid customer base.

"Denis revolutionized the communications sector. Before cellphones were a luxury and now they are a must," said Haiti's tourism minister, Stephanie Villedrouin.

'NATURAL-BORN' TALENT

O'Brien's investments in Haiti go far beyond telephony.

Last month, he broke ground on Haiti's first Marriott hotel and Digicel's charity foundation is spending millions to build 150 schools across the country for 90,000 students.

His approach has won acclaim from the likes of former U.S. President Bill Clinton, who heads the Clinton Global Initiative (CGI) and is also the United Nations special envoy to Haiti.

O'Brien coordinates CGI's Haiti Action Network, whose members have committed more than $350 million to education, infrastructure and business-development projects.

"The CGI program in Haiti is considered one of the best. It's really because of Denis's strong leadership," said Anne Hastings, director of Fonkoze, a micro-credit finance institution in Haiti. "He sets goals and people have to achieve them. That's unusual in Haiti."

His first non-profit investment in Haiti was the capital's historic Iron Market, the heart of downtown commercial activity, which O'Brien spent millions to rebuild after the earthquake.

"All the problems in Haiti are fixable, you just need the right project skills," he said. "You have to harness the people and show them how to do it. There's so much talent here, people who are creative and inventive."

To prove his point, Digicel has moved its call center for the French-speaking Caribbean from affluent Martinique to Haiti.

On his first visit to Haiti, O'Brien was struck by the streets crowded with vendors. "You have all these entrepreneurs all over this city. They are natural-born sellers," he said.

By celebrating enterprise on the TV show, a highly-produced affair with crane-mounted cameras, lighting, and dry ice and confetti for the winner, O'Brien hopes to inspire a new business culture of import substitution. This year's finalists included a coffee milling business, a solar energy company, a fish exporter, and local artisans and fashion designers.

"Hopefully somebody is sitting at home or under a tree and says ?I got an idea,'" he said. "Instead of importing rice, grow rice. Instead of importing chickens, breed chickens. Instead of importing eggs, lay eggs."

O'Brien's next goal: launching a smartphone revolution in Haiti and offering mobile banking to the poor. Digicel is investing in extra bandwidth this year to handle a 4G network upgrade, raising its total investment in Haiti to more than $600 million. "What we're trying to have is a First World telecommunications network in a developing economy, and most of the time that doesn't happen," he said.

Digicel relies on Asian firms such as Samsung to continue lowering prices thanks to cheap Taiwanese semi-conductors. "We can buy a smartphone for $70 today. In 2013 it will be $30," he said, predicting prices would hit $10 within a couple of years.

Since gobbling up its main competitor, Comcel, last year, Digicel admits it has had service issues but says they are being addressed. Some suggest it may have too cozy a relationship with the government, creating a virtual state within a state, rivaling the influence of the United Nations or the World Bank.

Indeed, Digicel is Haiti's largest taxpayer and its main building houses the offices of the mayor of Port-au-Prince as well as the Red Cross. "Digicel's building is where I come to give blood," says Cyril Pressoir, a local businessman whose father owns a travel company. "Should it be like this? Shouldn't we be able to stand on our own feet? Sure, but he (O'Brien) gets things done."

EDUCATING HAITI

O'Brien, whose mother was a human rights activist in Ireland and who is a father of four, has spent $25 million on development projects through the foundation.

"Our foundation is every bit as important as our technical department," O'Brien said. "Most multi-billion dollar companies rob the country blind. We like to make a good profit but sleep well at night."

His work is dotted all over Haiti. "Denis is always the first to respond if we need help," said Gena Heraty, an Irish woman who has worked in Haiti for almost 20 years and heads a special needs program for poor children run by the charity Friends of the Orphans.

When Heraty told him about a girl who suffered brain damage when a wall fell on her during the earthquake, O'Brien built a house for the girl and her mother and bought a 'tap-tap' - a traditional Haitian pick-up truck taxi - to help out the father.

The morning after the business gala, O'Brien drove out to the rural community of Saut d'Eau for the inauguration of one of the new schools built by his foundation.

The school's nine classrooms, computer lab, auditorium, cafeteria, library and basketball court cost $326,000.

The Digicel Foundation has built 87 schools so far, at an average cost of around $180,000. It does not pay operating costs so is careful to pick communities that are committed to running the school.

Teachers at the Saut d'Eau school earn $60-65 a month and school fees are $10 a year. The school was founded by Paul Calisme, a 59-year-old Haitian ex-pat who runs it with savings from his job at a Connecticut car wash. "I left my town 23 years ago but I had a dream," he said, noting that about 25 percent of local children do not attend school.

At a simple ceremony, children in plaid uniforms sang a welcome song ending with a shout of "Long live Haiti. Long live Digicel."

That's one of the reasons I love slow cooker recipes, and when I'm doing Phase One I'll definitely be making food in the slow cooker each weekend to eat during the week. ? I thought it might be helpful if I shared a round-up of my favorite slow cooker recipes that work for Phase One.

I hope all the other slow cooker fans who are also South Beach dieters (or low-carb eaters) will enjoy this collection of ideas, and if any of you have other slow cooker favorites that are Phase One, I hope you'll share those links in the comments.

Inflation in China has reached a seven-month high. It comes as the country is dealing with its coldest winter in 28 years, pushing up the prices of vegetables and pork. The consumer price index for December was 2.5 percent higher from the previous year, according to the National Bureau of Statistics. Chinese stocks also took a plunge on the news, and concerned with whether Chinese exports and credit growth will rise due to the inflation. Snow in North China and warmer temperatures in the south have affected the price of vegetables and their growth and even transportation. Also, with less produce available, people are eating more pork, driving up the prices for that commodity. Sinolink Futures believes vegetable prices climbed over eight percent in December alone. Bank of Communications chief economist Lian Ping believes that the consumer price index will grow to three or 3.5 percent this year.

George P. Bush weighing run in Texas

AUSTIN, Texas (AP) -- George Prescott Bush is gearing up to run for a little-known but powerful office in a state where his family already is a political dynasty and where his Hispanic roots could help extend a stranglehold on power Republicans have enjoyed for two decades.

The 36-year-old Fort Worth attorney says he is close to settling on campaigning for Texas land commissioner next year. He doesn't expect to make up his mind until he knows what Texas Gov. Rick Perry, a fellow Republican, decides to do.

"We for sure are running, the question is the office," Bush told The Associated Press during the first interview about his political future since filing paperwork in November to seek elected office in Texas.

Bush's father is former Florida Gov. Jeb Bush, his grandfather is former President George H.W. Bush and his uncle is former President and Texas Gov. George W. Bush. Perry has been governor since George W. left for the White House.

Land commissioner traditionally has been a steppingstone to higher office, but Bush said little about any plans to eventually become a national political force.

Instead, he spoke of how his past experience as an asset manager would help him manage the Permanent Schools Fund, which pays for public education and is managed by the land commissioner. He also said his perspective as an Afghanistan war veteran will help him use the post to become a leader in veterans' affairs.

Bush said he would announce his final decision after the Texas Legislature adjourns in May but added that his choice will depend "where the governor's thinking is." Perry, who flamed out as a presidential candidate but remains popular in Texas, says he'll reveal this summer if he will seek another term.

Some have speculated that Bush could challenge Perry for governor -- and even if he doesn't, what Perry decides will trigger political dominos falling.

Land Commissioner Jerry Patterson plans to run for lieutenant governor next year, creating a vacancy in his office. But Attorney General Greg Abbott, a Republican, may himself run for governor in 2014, meaning his post could be open too.

Bush suggested he'd be willing to wait his turn politically rather than immediately seeking top positions coveted by others in the state GOP.

"We've said that we want to be team players in the party, providing a younger, fresher vision for our values," he said in the interview Friday.

Bush speaks Spanish, and his mother Columba is from Mexico. Conservatives view George P. Bush on the ballot as a way to solidify support among Hispanics.

A Democrat has not won statewide office in Texas since 1994, but Hispanics tend to vote overwhelmingly Democratic and accounted for two-thirds of Texas' population growth over the last decade. Bush noted: "We'll be majority Hispanic in six years."

"I don't necessarily agree with the idea that having a candidate of Hispanic origin, or someone who can speak Spanish, can automatically obtain these votes," Bush said of Hispanics. "Having said that, it's important tactically to have candidates that understand issues of the community."

Bush's mother has said that one of the reasons she and Jeb Bush left Texas for Florida in the 1970s was because she felt like she had experienced racism here. But George P. Bush said, "the way I view it, rather than an issue of discomfort, is economic opportunity."

"This has been, at least for our generation, the best place to be economically," he said of Texas and its record of strong job creation.

He said he didn't think there was more intolerance toward Hispanics in Texas.

"Obviously, I think that issue exists wherever you go," he said. "I don't think it's just unique here."

Bush said of trying to stand out among his famous political family, "It's always been the thing of my grandmother to say, `Go out and make a name for yourself' and that's something that I've followed."

"But who better to ask for advice on politics than two former presidents and a former governor?" he said. "They're not involved in the day-to-day operations. They're not involved in formulating my ideology. It's more of an informal advice."

Bush said his grandfather inspired him to join the military, and he was deployed to Afghanistan as an intelligence officer in the U.S. Naval Reserve. He said that before enlisting, he knew politics was in his blood but felt he was too inexperienced to run for office.

It wasn't until the last few months, however, that "I felt it was time for my generation to step forward in state politics," Bush said.

Bush now spends his time crisscrossing Texas and the country, raising money and meeting with supporters. He was in Austin on Monday and posed for pictures outside the state Capitol before disappearing into meetings with legislators.

Someone he didn't see, however, was Perry. The governor said Bush's seeking elected office is a good thing for Texas and the Republican Party, and that he would like to speak to him about it adding: "He knows my phone number."

But then, Bush has his uncle to turn to for Texas gubernatorial perspective.

"It's much like starting a business," Bush said, "and having people who have been there and done it and run statewide, it's definitely been helpful."

Flushing Nemo: Home aquarium species a potential threat to California waters

Well-intentioned children and aquarium hobbyists seeking to ?free? their pet fish down a toilet bowl or into a local waterway may inadvertently be contributing to the threat of invasive species downstream, according to a new report from the University of California, Davis.

In a report released today to the California Ocean Protection Council, lead author Susan Williams, an evolution and ecology professor with the UC Davis Bodega Marine Laboratory, found that more than 11 million non-native ornamental marine individuals ? such as tropical fish, seaweed and snails bound for aquariums ? representing at least 102 species are being imported annually through California?s ports of San Francisco and Los Angeles, primarily from Indonesia and the Philippines. And 13 of those species have been introduced to California marine waters ? presumably after being released from aquariums.

While that number is low, the report cautions that 69 percent of the introduced species established themselves successfully in California, signaling a potential threat to marine ecosystems. Some non-native, invasive species can rapidly spread and outcompete native species for food and habitat.

?Although relatively few aquarium species have been introduced compared to species in other pathways, such as ballast water, they are highly successful because they?re grown to be hardy and robust,? Williams said. ?They have to be tough to survive in the trade.?

The aquarium trade represents a $1 billion a year global industry and a popular home hobby, second only to photography, the report said. It has also introduced some of the world?s worst invasive species, such as the seaweed Caulerpa, the ?killer algae? that infected two lagoons in Southern California in 2000 and cost California more than $6 million to eradicate.

Another invader is the highly predatory lionfish, which regularly enters the state?s ports through the aquarium trade ? 20 lionfish were imported into San Francisco International Airport on a single day, the report said. Introduced to Florida in 1999, it spread rapidly throughout the Caribbean Sea and along the East Coast by 2010. Lionfish have not been reported in California waters, but the fish is able to withstand cooler temperatures. If released, a lionfish could establish itself as far north as San Francisco Bay and, even farther, as oceans continue to warm, the report said.

While the report highlighted lionfish and Caulerpa as species of special concern, it identified at least 34 species deemed able to tolerate California?s current marine climate.

The report is one of six that the UC Davis Bodega Marine Laboratory coordinated for the state, each exploring a different vector, or pathway, through which invasive species can enter California ocean waters. The other pathways include aquaculture, live seafood, live bait, fishing vessels and recreation vessels. Williams said it makes sense to focus on invasive threats from the aquarium trade because they can be managed primarily through public education, with minimal regulatory action or expensive measures.

?Unlike some other vectors, we can easily prevent unwanted introductions from the aquarium trade,? she said. ?Aquarium hobbyists can follow some simple practices ? like ?Don?t dump your aquarium? ? to avoid releasing aquarium species into natural water where they can become an expensive and harmful pest.? Williams said that people who no longer want an aquarium species can contact the vendor from which the species came or the California Department of Fish and Wildlife? (formerly called California Department of Fish and Game) to learn how to dispose of or return it responsibly.

For the risk assessment, researchers analyzed state and federal agency databases of non-native species associated with ornamental aquariums, as well as U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service inspection records for live animals imported into California ports, and state permit records for restricted species. The researchers also observed a routine, one-day inspection of live organisms arriving in air cargo at San Francisco International Airport for a snapshot view of the inspection process.

The scientists discovered several data limitations: Regulatory agencies do not track the ultimate destination of the aquarium species once they clear customs, so it is unknown how many species stay in California once they arrive.

Both Caulerpa and lionfish are also readily available for sale over the Internet, which presents a data gap for researchers and a regulatory challenge for agencies.

Further, regulatory authority for the trade is fragmented across state and federal agencies, and there is no central source of information on the species, regulations, permits or other relevant records.

?From the hobbyist or industry side, it is really hard to figure out the rules and regulations for holding live organisms in the state ? for importing, possessing and trading them,? said Williams. ?So one of our conclusions is that a more centralized information and permitting system would benefit the regulators, industry and hobbyists, and enable scientists to collect more information and better assess the risk.?

The study was funded by the California Ocean Protection Council and California Ocean Science Trust.
