NEW YORK (AP) ? More than 101 Dalmatians have tried to become America's most prized pooch. More than a thousand, probably.

And they've all ended up in the Westminster Kennel Club dog house.

That could change Tuesday night when a sprightly package of polka dots called Ian takes to the final ring at Madison Square Garden.

"He's silly, crazy and pretty wonderful to live with," handler Michael Scott said after Monday night's win in the nonsporting group.

Wobbling the whole way, a people-pleasing Pekingese made quite a walk down the green carpet to join the best of seven collection. He'll be joined by a German shepherd named Captain Crunch who likes to play soccer with his 15-year-old co-owner and a spirited wire-haired dachshund.

"These are dogs that people recognize, people like them," Westminster television host David Frei said.

The terrier, sporting and working champions will be picked Tuesday evening, with judge Cindy Vogels choosing the best in show just before 11 p.m. She has a strong terrier background but, as the fanciers like to say, the winner often comes down to "the dog on the day."

And it could be the Dalmatian. Entered in the very first Westminster in 1877, these fire house dogs have made it to the final cut seven previous times. They're not alone ? Labrador retrievers, golden retrievers and dachshunds also are among the country's most popular dogs, but have never won the coveted silver bowl at the country's most prestigious show.

"I don't know why that is," said Ian's owner, Barbara Lyons. "I think it's because of the fierce competition."

In fact, she wasn't expecting this group win, either. She was set to head home to Laguna Beach, Calif., on Tuesday, but was changing her plans.

Ian is certainly distinctive. He has black spectacle markings around his eyes and plenty of spots evenly placed on his coat. He celebrated his win by jumping on most everyone around him.

Ian has won four best in show titles in his career. The Pekingese he'll face has won a whopping 114 titles.

Malachy the Peke drew cheers that grew louder with every tiny step as he repeated as the top toy. Pink tongue peeking out from his black face, he beat a heralded affenpinscher called Banana Joe in a most competitive group.

"He doesn't run. He has a dignified Pekingese gait," handler David Fitzpatrick said.

Mexican-born Captain Crunch romped to victory in the herding group. Handled by old pro James Moses, his champion attracted ample applause, as German shepherds always do at the Garden.

"The crowd really had him up," Moses said. "He handles the carpet well."

Handles soccer balls, too. That's what he enjoys doing with teen Maria Deschamps, one of his several owners.

"I like to play with him all day long," she said.

Cinders the wire-haired dachshund led the hounds, then wanted to sit rather than stand for her victory picture.

"She's a clown," handler Cheri Koppenhaver said.

More than 2,000 entries in 185 breeds and varieties were at the 136th Westminster. Still to show early Tuesday: a wire fox terrier who won the National show and a standard poodle who took the Eukanuba event.

There's also a black cocker spaniel who was the No. 1 show dog last year ? he's named Beckham, maybe a good omen since a 12-story ad featuring soccer star David Beckham posing in his underwear is painted on a building that overlooks the Garden.

Beckham the dog, by the way, beat out Malachy as the country's top-winning show dog in 2011.

Plus there's a Valentine's Day treat on tap: A couple from Washington state with a Tibetan mastiff plans to hold their wedding among all the pooches.

Breed winners included a chow chow co-owned by Martha Stewart and a xoloitzcuintli called Giorgio Armani, a nice start for the alphabetically challenged contestant during Fashion Week in New York City.

The xoloitzcuintli (shoh-loh-eets-KWEEN'-tlee), formerly known as the Mexican hairless, is among six new breeds at this year's show. "Pronounce it!" a couple of fans playfully called out when the name appeared on the scoreboard.

Intel settles NY antitrust case for just $6.5 million (Reuters)

(Reuters) ? Intel Corp agreed to pay just $6.5 million to resolve an antitrust lawsuit in which New York's attorney general accused the world's largest chipmaker of threatening computer makers and paying billions of dollars of kickbacks to maintain its market dominance.

The settlement ends a November 2009 Delaware case brought by Andrew Cuomo, then New York's attorney general and now governor. Eric Schneiderman, the current attorney general, took over the case when he succeeded Cuomo in that position.

Intel's $6.5 million payment represents less than five hours of profit for the Santa Clara, California-based company, based on reported net income of $12.94 billion for 2011.

Cuomo had accused Intel of violating state and federal antitrust law through a "systematic worldwide campaign" to bully customers into buying its personal computer chips, at the expense of rival Advanced Micro Devices Inc.

But the lawsuit lost much of its punch when U.S. District Judge Leonard Stark said the state could not seek triple damages, and was allowed to pursue claims over just three years of computer purchases, not four or six as it had sought.

Jennifer Givner, a spokeswoman for Schneiderman, said the state's lawyers still believe their substantive claims have merit, but that "in light of the court's decision believe that no purpose is served by pursuing the matter further."

Intel said it was pleased to settle, and that the accord did not require it to admit to any allegations or violation of law, or make any changes to its business.

"We have always said that Intel's business practices are lawful, pro-competitive and beneficial to consumers," General Counsel Doug Melamed said in a statement.

Cuomo had contended that Intel bribed or coerced computer makers such as Dell Inc, Hewlett-Packard Co and International Business Machines Corp, and threatened retaliation.

Emails showed that top Intel officers including Chief Executive Paul Otellini were aware of some of the improper activity, Cuomo alleged.

Intel has long faced allegations of anticompetitive conduct, and is still appealing a 1.06 billion euro (now US$1.41 billion) fine imposed in 2009 by European regulators.

In 2010, the Federal Trade Commission settled a case in which it accused Intel of unlawfully stifling competition in microprocessors.

The same year, a different Delaware federal judge approved a settlement with shareholders that called for Intel to make more than 40 corporate governance changes, including the creation of a compliance committee to monitor antitrust litigation.

And in November 2009, barely a week after Cuomo sued, Intel agreed to pay AMD $1.25 billion to settle all outstanding legal disputes with its smaller rival.

Intel is incorporated in Delaware.

The case is New York v. Intel Corp, U.S. District Court, District of Delaware, No. 09-00827.

LOS ANGELES (AP) ? Passengers on United Airlines Flight 531 from Chicago to Los Angeles didn't just get to travel with a world-famous celebrity, they also had their picture taken with him.

The affable celebrity was Oscar ? as in the Academy Awards statuette ? who rode in first class alongside film academy president Tom Sherak before making the rounds during the five-hour commercial flight to pose for photos.

Sherak surprised passengers just before they boarded the flight, dubbed "Oscar 1," at Chicago's O'Hare International Airport. He arrived with the Oscar in hand and announced that the famous golden guy would be flying with them.

Actually, there were two Oscars in the cabin on the Thursday flight. And not just any Oscars. These guys will be presented for best picture at this year's Academy Awards.

Passengers used cellphones and pocket cameras to snap photos with the Oscars as airline workers held a show-related trivia contest, awarding hoodies and hats from the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences.

"This is the closest I'm ever going to be to having one, so I'm enjoying it," Rockford Yapp, of Chicago, said as he held the coveted trophy. The 52-year-old also won an Oscar sweatshirt because he was sitting in the 84th seat on the plane. The 84th annual Academy Awards will be presented Feb. 26 at the Kodak Theatre and broadcast on ABC.

"My kids are going to be so excited!" Heather Boyd, of Chicago, said as she reviewed her shots on her cellphone. "The pictures are going on Facebook as soon as I get on the ground."

Several passengers uploaded the photos to Facebook immediately upon landing.

"We're staying in Studio City and I was just hoping to see someone from 'American Idol,'" said a thrilled Joan Castell of Woodstock, Ill., who was heading west with her husband, Scott, for a vacation.

"I think United should do something entertaining like this on all their flights," he said.

A flight attendant called the occasion a "once-in-a-lifetime opportunity" as she invited passengers to enjoy "the flight of the Oscars."

Sherak said this is the first time Oscars have flown commercially out in the open. The statuettes, which have been made at Chicago's R.S. Owens foundry for more than 70 years, are typically shipped to Los Angeles with little fanfare.

So why have Oscar mix it up with passengers?

"Just for fun," Sherak said.

The pilot even allowed an Oscar into the cockpit of the 757 before takeoff, calling the statuette his most prestigious "non-human" passenger yet.

"It's a special treat. We want everyone to enjoy the flight and enjoy the show," said Capt. Mel Mason Jr.

Nearly everyone on board held one of the Oscars, and the 13 1/2-inch tall statuette surprised them with his heft. Made of a proprietary metal called brittanium and coated in 24-karat gold, Oscar weighs 8 1/2-pounds.

Altogether, Sherak was escorting 42 of the trophies back to academy headquarters in Beverly Hills, Calif., but only two rode in the cabin. The rest had to tough it out in cargo.

The Oscar celebration continued at Los Angeles International Airport. Gold and silver balloons and oversized Oscar posters decorated the arrival gate. As passengers left the plane, each was given an Oscar of their own ? a tiny, chocolate version.

"United Airlines announces the arrival of the 84th Academy Awards Oscars," a voice said over the loudspeaker as Sherak followed the throng of passengers.

"He's home!" proclaimed Sherak, holding a statuette above his head.

Tiny primate is ultrasonic communicator

ScienceDaily (Feb. 8, 2012) ? Tarsiers are pint-size primates from Southeast Asia who produce some of the most extreme ultrasonic calls in the animal kingdom, well beyond the threshold of human hearing.

They belong to a relict lineage of primates that gave rise to monkeys and apes about 60 million years ago, and for the past 45 million years tarsiers have been largely unchanged. Although tarsiers are important "living fossils," they are difficult to study in the wild. Scarcely five inches high, they are nocturnal and subsist mostly on a diet of insects, along with some small vertebrates such as lizards and snakes.

Nathaniel Dominy, an associate professor of anthropology at Dartmouth, describes the tarsier's ultrasonic vocalizations as "extreme, and comparable to the highly specialized vocalizations of bats and dolphins, which are used primarily for echolocation."

Dominy and a cadre of colleagues have been studying the hearing and vocalizations of one tarsier species in the Philippines, Tarsius syrichta. Results of their research appeared online in the Royal Society journal Biology Letters, on February 8, 2012.

Some species of tarsier seem rather talkative, with a range of calls audible to humans and capable of "conveying alarm, deterring rivals, and facilitating social interactions," the authors note. In contrast, tarsiers from Borneo and the Philippines have conventionally been described as "ordinarily silent." This apparent lack of vocalizations led investigators to suspect that the animals were indeed engaged in these critical communications. We just couldn't hear them.

Recent technical advances allowed the investigators to test the hearing of six wild tarsiers on the island of Mindanao. They found "an audible range that extended substantially into the ultrasound," reaching a high of 91 kilohertz (kHz), "a value that surpasses the known range of all other primates and is matched by few animals."

They also used a microphone and recording unit capable of registering sounds up 96 kHz. The upper limit of human hearing is generally set at 20 kHz, and frequencies above this limit are classified as ultrasound. In the field, the team recorded the sounds of 35 wild tarsiers from the islands of Bohol and Leyte with this equipment, documenting eight individuals giving out a purely ultrasonic call at approximately 70 kHz. The tone-like structure of the call resembles those of other tarsier species, but none were purely ultrasonic.

The researchers observed that tarsiers emitted their ultrasonic call when humans were near, suggesting they were voicing alarm. "Ultrasonic alarm calls can be advantageous to both the signaler and receiver as they are potentially difficult for predators to detect and localize," they write.

Dominy and his group conclude that there may be selective advantages to vocalizations in the pure ultrasound. They call them "private channels of communication with the potential to subvert detection by predators, prey, and competitors."

"Our findings not only verify that tarsiers are sensitive to the ultrasound, but also that Tarsius syrichta can send and receive vocal signals in the pure ultrasound," Dominy says.

CARACAS, Venezuela ? Police have arrested two men and a woman suspected of participating in last week's kidnapping of Mexico's ambassador to Venezuela and his wife.

Four armed men seized Ambassador Carlos Pujalte and his wife as they were leaving a party shortly before midnight on Jan. 29 in Venezuela's capital.

The kidnappers freed the couple four hours later.

In a statement released on Monday, the prosecutor-general's office announced the arrests of Juan Pacheco, Oswaldo Leon and Mayurki Barreto.
