Do the Bride a Favor Presents Low Cost Wedding Tips

Orange County, CA (PRWEB) December 30, 2012

Prompted by ?Ways You Can Learn to Have a Low Cost but Wonderful Wedding?, Do the Bride a Favor presented a few helpful insights.

A wedding may be limited by budget it does not have to be limited in any other way. A cheaper wedding can save the couple a few dollars, and still have the look and feel of a larger wedding. As the bride plans for the wedding, here a few other considerations for the big day.

As a general rule for a budget tight ceremony, less is more. Keep the theme for the ceremony simple but stylish and appropriate. Try narrowing down wedding colors down to one, if possible. Decorations in a multiple array of colors look pretty but are more complicated to coordinate and can be more expensive in the long run.

For wedding decor, try to keep those singular as well. A mixed bouquet of flowers may be beautiful but having different flowers arranged together is more costly. Do the Bride a Favor suggests that the bride choose an in season flower theme for the wedding, which is a better choice when it comes to spending.

The reception may be by far one of the more costly parts of the wedding. Facilitating an area for guests to eat heartily and enjoy themselves is not an easy task. For a reception at a venue, limiting course options is a better idea.

Do the Bride a Favor said, ?Wedding receptions can have so many desserts. They're delicious but the guests can't eat them all. Just having the wedding cake as the only dessert choice for the evening is sometimes enough.? Since guests are not only eating but mingling and dancing as well, having an abundance of food is not really necessary. That is one way to save a little extra cash.

Don't forget gifts for the guest in attendance, a unique wedding favor. Edible treats, if not purchased, can be surprisingly easy to make. ?Custom bridal chocolates that are ordered online or through a bridal store are not more difficult than any other chocolate to make at home.? Do the Bride a Favor continued, ?Making the chocolate yourself is a great way to impress your guests.? For children in attendance, small toys like bouncy balls in cute decorative bags are a nice and inexpensive thank you.

A smaller wedding can be a tender and wonderful experience for everyone involved, without having to break the bank for the couple and their families.

Getting Mama Ready

?

In 1966, when we got word of my father?s death, it was my brother?s crying that frightened me most. The way he beat at the wall and yelled about the men he would grow up and kill one day. ?Mama had worried that her death would undo Frank. Maybe she?d remembered his cries from all those years ago, too.

?Men aren?t as emotionally strong as women,? she said. ?Besides, you and Linda have your families.?

?Frank has a family, too, Mama,? I reminded her. ?He has the biggest family of all.? Six kids.

She acted surprised, like it had never occurred to her that my brother had someone other than her to care for him.

?Linda is going to have the hardest time, Mama,? I said. ?You are all the parent she?s ever really known.?

I read recently that in tribal villages it is the wails of the mourning that alerts others in the village when someone has died. People in this country don?t give over much to wailing. We are conditioned to think that such mourning is unbecoming. I blame the damn Yankees who burned Atlanta. Perhaps you blame the Puritans? Whatever. The wails of my sister, head down on Mama?s lap, are what I will recall forever more about Mama?s dying day. And I will never ever again be able to think of Jesus upon that cross without hearing the sounds of Mama?s suffering.

Mama drowned to death. It was an awful, terrible, horrifying dying.

I?d told my brother and sister ahead of time, I don?t need to be there when she passes. It has taken me a lifetime to get over the horror of seeing my father dead in that military casket when I was only a young girl. I did not want my last memory of Mama to be of her dying, so I told them not to call. But they called anyway. On Christmas Day. You better come. Don?t tarry, they warned. Mama had told Frank that morning: I am dying. Later in the day, she told Linda: I am leaving soon. ?She never said anything to me about leaving at all.

I began writing Mama?s obit in the car as we headed north on I-5. Snoqualmie was snowy, icy, so Tim took the long route through Portland. Mama had called me in July and asked me to write her obit. I had been upset with her for asking. Why was she talking about dying? She wasn?t ill. Not that any of us knew of then. Did she have a premonition?

Mama had gotten out on Sunday and paid Mannie & Nicole & Landon a visit in their home. On Christmas Eve she attended the candlelight service at church.

?You didn?t bring me a present,? she said, when we arrived late Christmas night. I wish I?d thought to tell her I was her present. Instead I reminded her of the new Christmas jammies and slippers I?d already given her.

I finished writing Mama?s obit at 2 a.m. on Dec. 26 at the foot of my mama?s bed as she lay sleeping. On Christmas Day Mama had woken unable to swallow any of her pain medications. The only pain relief she had was the liquid morphine which we had been giving her for several weeks in addition to her daily dosages of medications. Keeping her comfortable was increasingly difficult. I woke at 4 a.m. and gave her more morphine, and again at 7 a.m. but her breathing was labored, as if she was moving wheelbarrows full of rocks from the garden. ?Hospice visited her that morning, said we could give her the morphine every hour but that she might last weeks, yet. No way to know for sure.

?Warm up the car and let?s go somewhere, girls,? Mama said mid-afternoon. Linda and I laughed. Mama was never, not for one minute, not keen to what was going on around her.

One of the many photos Linda and I shared with each other over the past four months, after getting Mama ready for the day.

By late afternoon, the breathing that we had thought so labored in the morning sounded like a diesel truck moving up a steep grade. Mama?s forehead and face were pinched in pain. Nothing we did eased it. So Frank, Linda and I gathered around Mama?s bed and prayed for God to hasten her death, to show all of us a mercy.

Not a one of us could stand to see Mama suffering so.

At 6 p.m. I broke down in tears, angry that Mama was drowning, that I could hear the fluid building and yet could do nothing to make her comfortable. Only one dose of morphine an hour Hospice reiterated when we asked. Anything else would be euthanasia, someone suggested.

?She?s dying,? I cried. ?Why do we have dosages for the dying??

Linda was on one side holding Mama?s right hand. I was on the other side, holding her left. She had a good grip on the both of us as her frail shoulders heaved, as she gasped for the next breath.

?She needs more morphine,? I said to my sister.

?Then you give it,? she replied.

Neither of us moved. We had half-an-hour before we could give the next dosage. So we cried, my sister and I, cried and prayed for Mama, who was now pushing a train full of rocks up Mt. Rainer.

I remembered when Mama?s brother Uncle Charlie died, Mama was at his bedside. She told me later she could tell he was about to die because of the death rattle. As a nurse, Mama was familiar with the death rattle of the dying. Was this it? Was this what was making Mama work so hard to get the next breath?

Landon visits Mama one last time in the hours before her death.

Linda got up to go to the bathroom. Nicole Barnes, my nephew?s wife, took Mama?s left hand and as we sat there, Mama?s breathing shifted, like a trucker switching too quickly into second-gear. Linda returned and there was a loud thumping. It really did sound as if Jesus was knocking on the door of Mama?s heart. Over and over again, loud thumping. Linda got up and gave Mama another dose of morphine. We saw Mama?s face relax, felt her breathing calm a bit, fall into a rhythm. She was sleeping, finally.

Frank and nephew Robert took our places at Mama?s bedside while Linda and I retreated to the den for a moment. A half-hour later, Linda went to check on Mama and she called out to me, ?Mama is burning up.?

Linda could see it the minute she walked into Mama?s room. We took her temperature: 104. Frank and Janet went to call Hospice, to see if we could do something more. Mama was awake again, working, laboring, the breathing a gazillion times worse than it had been all day. A demon had a gnarly grip on Mama?s throat and was holding her underwater, and she was fighting to surface.

Frank appeared in the doorway and made a proclamation issued by Hospice: ?If she has a fever she is actively dying.?

Brilliant. Freaking brilliance.

Oh. And they are too busy with others dying to come out and help but, no, you can?t give any more morphine, other than the one dose an hour. You can, however, crush up the oxycodone and try to give that to her. This was the best they had to offer as Mama lay dying?

I turned to a praise station on Pandora and placed my iPhone on Mama?s chest.

In the morning when I rise give me Jesus. Give me Jesus. Give me Jesus. You can have all this world. Just give me Jesus.

I was in desperate need for an outer body experience. I did not want to be there. I did not want to witness my mother?s death.

When I am alone, give me Jesus. Give me Jesus. Give me Jesus. You can have all this world. Just give me Jesus.

I wanted to remember her eating the soup I had brought her before my last leaving. I wanted to remember how sweet she had been that last week together. How happy she was over the Christmas tree I had decorated and put up in her room. ?Leave it plugged in,? she said, when we got ready for bed. ?I like looking at the lights when I wake.?

Mama loved Christmas, always. The grandkids earliest memories of her always include stories of Christmas at Grandma Shelby?s.

Grandma Shelby thanking Konnie for the Christmas gift she sent ? sparkle shoes. ?I?d wear them to bed if I could,? Mama told me Christmas night.

?

Mama gripped mine and Linda?s hands as she tried to rise above the drowning.

When I come to die, give me Jesus. Give me Jesus. Give me Jesus. You can have all this world, Just give me Jesus.

Deep, deep rattling breaths. And then nothing. Complete and utter silence. Linda looked at me. I looked at her. Then we both looked at Mama. She was still breathing. Her shoulders still moving but Mama was breathing quietly as a newborn baby. In and out. In and out. And then she opened her eyes and Linda cried out, ?She dying.?

We both cried out, ?We love you, Mama.?

?I believe that,? Mama had said on Christmas night as I sat on her bed and told her I loved her.

Mama died in that moment when she opened her eyes and they rolled back in her head. That?s the moment when Linda fell across Mama?s lap and let the villagers in the tribe know that Mama had died.

I left the room, did my bawling sitting alone in the den, wondering how in the world I would ever forget that moment, afraid if I don?t forget it my brain will snap and it won?t be Frank or Linda who has the hardest time, but me.

Writers are different breed. Tim says we are all a little crazy to begin with. I have long been drawn to the literature of those who live on the edge, emotionally. I wrote my senior thesis on Edgar Allen Poe. While others were reading F. Scott Fitzgerald, I was reading everything I could find on Zelda. I felt I knew her, understood her fragileness. People always tell me how strong I am, but inside I don?t feel strong. I feel like thin glass.

I worked up enough whatever it is to go back into my Mama?s room. Tim was standing behind my sister, comforting her. I sat back down by Mama and made myself look at her, and cried along with everyone else in the room.

Then Frank walked over, kissed our mother and told her ?Go be with God.?

The Last Bath

I asked my nephew Robert to bring down a pan of warm water. Then I went into the bathroom and grabbed two bars of soap and two washcloths, and a couple of white towels. Robert brought a deep bowl of warm water. Then he left the room and I shut the door.

Everyone left Linda and me alone while we tended to our mother the way we have been doing every day since August, when she first fell ill. ?Pick out something pretty to wear today,? Mama would tell one or the other of us. If she didn?t like what we picked out she?d tell us and we?d have to switch it until she had something that matched, that she felt comfortable and pretty in. Linda started the routine of taking Mama?s picture every time she got her dressed for the day and texting the photo to me and I would do the same for her.

When Mama died she was wearing blue flannel pajamas with little grey donkeys on them. Appropriate, given that I always said Mama was a mule-headed woman. But when nephew Mannie had dropped by earlier in the evening, he had razzed Mama about the pajamas.

?Really, Grandma Shelby?? he had chided. ?Who buys pajamas with Eeyore on them? Pooh I can understand, but Eeyore??

I unbuttoned the top. Linda tried to slip the sleeve off Mama?s arm. I tried the other one. Neither of us could get Mama?s arms out. So Linda opened the bedside drawer and took out the scissors Mama had used nearly every night to cut open packs of nicotine gum. Then Linda cut those Eeyore pajamas off our mama.

And we laughed.

And then we cried.

?Thank you, Jesus,? Linda said, as she took one washcloth and I took the other and we began to work in concert bathing our mother one last time.

Daughters bathing the mother who had first bathed us.

It may have been the most primal thing I have ever done in my life but I could have stayed in that room with my mother?s dead body bathing it for a long, long time.

It felt like grace after all we had all been through.

?How do you like bathing your big baby?? Mama had asked me one day as I was toweling her off after a shower.

?I like it fine, Mama,? I?d replied. In truth it had been uncomfortable at first, but over time I came to see the dressing of Mama for the day as the most loving, intimate moments I would ever have with my mother. I chose the fluffiest of towels to pat her dry. I rubbed the cocoa butter lotion gently down her arms, her legs, careful to not mess with the blood clots.

Linda picked out her last outfit. A black beaded top. A cream silk sweater with pearls. Tan pants. The new hat granddaughter Taylor had bought her for Christmas and the glitter shoes that granddaughter Konnie had mailed her for Christmas. Linda couldn?t get the clasp on the snowflake pin she?d bought Mama as a Christmas present, so she handed it to me. I pinned it to the left side of the sweater, like a medal ? only this one was made of all sparkle.

That was our Mama. The sparkle of our family.

Forever and for always.

A memorial service will be held Saturday, Jan. 5, 2 p.m. at South Beach Christian Center, 1360 State Route 105 Grayland, WA, 98547?. The family requests that in lieu of flowers, any remembrances be made to South Beach Christian Center. Shelby Spears will be interned alongside her husband in Greeneville, TN, at Andrew Johnson National Cemetery.

Governor signs new law for abortion clinics in Michigan

(Reuters) - Michigan's Republican governor on Friday signed into law new rules for abortion providers that supporters say will protect the health of pregnant women but critics say will shutter clinics and restrict access.

The law signed by Governor Rick Snyder increases state oversight of abortion clinics and establishes a screening protocol to make sure women are not being forced to get an abortion.

The measure requires health facilities or clinics that perform more than 120 abortions a year to become licensed freestanding surgical outpatient facilities.

It also requires physicians to "properly and respectfully dispose of fetal remains."

"This bill respects a woman's right to choose while helping protect her health and safety, including making sure a pregnant person is not being coerced into a decision," Snyder said.

The Michigan law is the latest flashpoint in the battle between opponents and supporters of abortion, a procedure that is legal in the United States. In the past two years, conservative Republicans in more than a dozen U.S. states have take steps to eliminate state funding for Planned Parenthood, a family planning provider that performs abortions.

Critics of the Michigan law fear its insistence on new, standalone facilities will hurt women in rural and low-income areas as it could force some clinics to close. They say questioning women on whether an abortion is voluntary subjects them to a type of interrogation.

The Center for Reproductive Rights, an abortion rights group that opposed the measure, said it could force many existing abortion providers in the state to either tear down their offices and rebuild from the ground up -- or shutter their practices.

The Michigan chapter of the American Civil Liberties Union, which also opposed the law, called its passage a setback for reproductive rights and the health of women.

"Safety was never the intention of this law. The only thing this law accomplishes is to make a difficult decision even more difficult," said Rana Elmir, the communications director for the Michigan ACLU.

Snyder vetoed a separate measure on Friday that would have restricted insurance providers and businesses from providing elective abortion coverage in employee health plans.

The bill also would have forced the victims of rape or incest who did not purchase separate abortion coverage to pay for the procedure out of pocket.

"I don't believe it is appropriate to tell a woman who becomes pregnant due to a rape that she needed to select elective insurance coverage," Snyder said in his veto message.

"And as a practical matter, I believe this type of policy is an overreach of government into the private market."

Elmir, at Michigan ACLU, called Snyder's veto of the second measure "encouraging."

Everything Cebu | 30 Kitchen + Bar

The cozy little place in Banilad, Cebu City, known as 30 Kitchen + Bar has a diverse menu with at least something for almost anyone to enjoy. An article on circuitmag.net mentioned that the eclectic menu is due to owners Quinito Moras and Jennise Mesina basing it on food that they themselves would have in their own kitchens.

30 kitchen bar 30 Kitchen + Bar

Since the menu at 30 Kitchen + Bar has been described as eclectic, you probably would like at least some idea of what to expect. The menu is divided into the categories below:

appetizers
salads
soups
?heavy belly? meals (with a choice of plain or garlic rice, toast, or fries)
sandwiches
pasta
desserts

You can see some customer photos of dishes from 30 Kitchen + Bar uploaded onto the foodspotting.com Web site. The mouthwatering photos feature some of the ?heavy belly? meals like chicken tenders, herb-crusted chicken, Cyprus chicken, Swedish meatballs, tenderloin steak, and pan-seared pork steak with demi-glace sauce.

At 30 Kitchen + Bar, the menu includes sandwiches ?for those days when you just can?t make up your mind.? If you?re the type who?s fond of bread with some chunky, substantial fillings, circuitmag.com recommended the Constantine, which is a large sandwich consisting of thinly sliced US Angus beef, onions, tomatoes, lettuce, and cucumber with creamy garlic, barbeque sauce, and chili sauce, all stuffed into panini-style bread. The resto-bar?s panini selection thoughtfully included a vegetarian option: eggplant, cucumber, lettuce, tomato, onions and cheese in grilled focaccia, with a side of homemade potato chips (these are actually included with all orders of the resto-bar?s paninis and Monte Cristo sandwiches). You?d probably be able to figure out that the resto-bar?s particular specialty is its French toast, because of the number of scrumptious variations formulated for it:

strawberries and cream
strawberries, chocolate and cream
banana, caramel and cream
apple-cinnamon and cream
apple-cinnamon, chocolate and cream
apple-cinnamon, caramel and cream
chocolate and cream
mangoes and cream
chocolate, mangoes and cream
Nutella and cream
Nutella, mangoes and cream
Nutella, bananas and cream
Nutella, strawberries and cream
banana, mangoes and caramel

The menu at 30 Kitchen + Bar states that only homemade fruit jam is used for the French toast. If you want to add a scoop of ice cream to the already rich dessert, you can do that too, for an additional fee. Admittedly, the menu is not really for dieters, but that?s just the way it is sometimes.

People on the Web site foursquare.com shared their suggestions for menu choices from 30 Kitchen + Bar. For pasta dishes, the top three seemed to be

sausage and spice pasta (penne and spicy sausage in tomato sauce)
? la casa pasta (with Spanish sardines in olive oil with chili flakes)
Temptation pasta (with bacon, ham, and mushrooms in white sauce)

? la casa pasta also seemed to be called Pasta 30 by some people since it?s evidently the house pasta. Incidentally, the resto-bar?s menu claims there is a pasta dish for every mood. As for entr?es, Cyprus chicken (pan-seared breast fillet with olives in tomato sauce, topped with mozzarella) and champignon pork (pan-seared pork chops with peppered mushroom saut?) got the most mentions. An additional tip from foursquare is to look for Tata and request for your potato wedges, buffalo wings, or even chicken-fried steak to be served Don Que style. This style apparently involves pairing some extra spicy gravy with these appetizing treats.

Since the place is also a bar, as stated clearly in its name, it serves beer, cocktails, shooters, and shots as well as coffee or tea and other refreshments. In spite of the perfectly adequate alcohol selection, many of the foursquare.com users are quite fond of the bottomless iced tea at 30 Kitchen + Bar. The drink has been described as having just the right sweetness that is not cloying.

The resto-bar opens at 3 p.m. for afternoon coffee and closes around 1 p.m. so you can drop in for a late dinner if necessary. If you?re going there for the very first time, you might in fact go past this place without even knowing it since you can?t see the signage unless you?re already right in front of it. The location of 30 Kitchen + Bar is before the entrance of Paradise Village, Banilad Road, Cebu City. Look on your left before you get past the village guardhouse and you?ll see 30 Kitchen + Bar next to the Caminade pet shop. For inquiries, you may call telephone number (032)518-8975 or 239-0057.

As of September 2012, a newer 30 Kitchen + Bar location had opened at The Gallery, in Mabolo, Cebu City. This space is located next to the Yu-Yu-Tei Japanese Restaurant.

Canon Cinema EOS1D C hits stores in Japan today, expected stateside later this week

At $11,999, this latest Canon 1D is hardly set to become a DSLR bestseller, but there are certainly a few pro shooters willing to line up for an incredibly versatile 18-megapixel 4K cam, with EOS lens compatibility and a full-frame sensor. We were expecting Canon's top-of-the-line beast to sell for just shy of $15,000, so this new sub-$12k sticker is a pleasant surprise. You'll also need to invest in a battery of high-speed (at least 100MB/s) CF cards -- the 1D C captures 4096 x 2160 video at 24 frames per second with an approximate file size of 3.76 gigs per minute of footage, according to the camera's instruction manual, which you'll find, along with a purchase link, at the source link below. The EOS-1D C is expected to hit stores in the US later this week, but a few lucky shooters have been out and about capturing demo reels for the last few weeks -- you'll find some of that footage after the break, along with a few more clips at the coverage links below.

Egypt's leader signs contentious constitution into law

CAIRO (Reuters) - Egyptian President Mohamed Mursi has signed into law a new Islamist-drafted constitution he says will help end political turmoil and allow him to focus on fixing the fragile economy.

Anxiety about the deepening economic crisis has gripped Egypt in past weeks, with many people rushing to take out their savings from banks and the government imposing new restrictions to reduce capital flight.

Results announced on Tuesday showed Egyptians had approved the text with an overwhelming 63.8 percent, paving the way for a parliamentary election in about two months.

The win gives Islamists their third straight electoral victory since veteran autocrat Hosni Mubarak was toppled in a 2011 revolution, following their earlier wins in parliamentary and presidential elections.

The presidency said Mursi signed a decree enforcing the charter late on Tuesday after the official announcement of the result of a referendum approving the basic law, Egypt's first constitution since Mubarak's overthrow.

The text has sharpened painful divisions in the Arab world's most populous nation and prompted often violent protests on the streets of Cairo.

Opposition groups condemn the new basic law as too Islamist and undemocratic, saying it could allow clerics to intervene in the lawmaking process and leave minority groups without proper legal protection.

But Mursi, catapulted into power by his Islamist allies, believes adopting the text is key to ending a protracted period of turmoil and uncertainty that has wrecked the economy.

He argues the constitution offers enough protection to all groups, saying many Egyptians are fed up with street protests that have prevented a return to normality and distracted the government from focusing on the economy.

An atmosphere of crisis has deepened in Egypt since the vote, with many Egyptians rushing to take out cash from banks and hoarding hard currency savings at home.

Sharpening people's concerns, the authorities imposed currency controls to prevent capital flight. Leaving or entering Egypt with more than $10,000 cash is now banned.

Rocked by often violent protests in the run up to the two-stage referendum this month, Cairo was calm, with only a small group of protesters burning tires overnight.

Mursi's government says its opponents are damaging the economy by prolonging political upheaval. It has pledged to impose unpopular tax increases and spending cuts to win a loan package from the International Monetary Fund.

Adding to the government's long list of worries, Communications Minister Hany Mahmoud resigned from his post citing his "inability to adapt to the government's working culture".

The United States, which provides billions of dollars a year in military and other support for Egypt and sees it as a pillar of security in the Middle East, called on Egyptian politicians to bridge divisions and on all sides to reject violence.

"President Mursi, as the democratically elected leader of Egypt, has a special responsibility to move forward in a way that recognizes the urgent need to bridge divisions," State Department spokesman Patrick Ventrell said.

Taliban says US base targeted in Afghan blast

By Reuters

KHOST, Afghanistan --?A suicide bomber killed three people in an attack on a U.S. base in Afghanistan on Wednesday, the same base that is believed to be used by the CIA and which a suicide bomber attacked three years ago killing seven CIA employees.

The Afghan Taliban claimed responsibility for the attack in the eastern town of Khost, saying they had sent a suicide bomber driving a van packed with explosives to the base.

"The target was those who serve Americans at that base," said Taliban spokesman Zabihullah Mujahid.

Afghanistan's NATO-led force said the bomber did not get into the base nor breach its perimeter. Police said the three dead were Afghans who were outside the base, which is beside a military airport.

The al Qaida-linked Haqqani network, widely regarded as the most dangerous U.S. foe in Afghanistan, is active in Khost province, which is on the Pakistani border.

After more than a decade of war, Taliban insurgents are still able to strike strategic military targets, and launch high-profile attacks in the capital, Kabul, and elsewhere.

Three years ago, an al Qaida-linked Jordanian double-agent killed seven CIA employees and a Jordanian intelligence officer in a suicide bombing at the same base in Khost, known as Forward Operating Base Chapman.

It was the second deadliest attack in CIA history.

Afghan police official General Abdul Qasim Baqizoy, the Khost police chief, said no CIA agents were hurt on Wednesday.

Afghan authorities are scrambling to improve security across the country before the U.S. combat mission ends in 2014.

Besides pressure from the Taliban, U.S.-led NATO forces also face a rising number of so-called insider attacks, in which Afghan forces turn their weapons on Western troops they are supposed to be working with.

On Monday, an Afghan policewoman killed a U.S. police adviser at the Kabul police headquarters, raising troubling questions about the direction of the war.

It appeared to be the first time that a woman member of Afghanistan's security forces carried out such an attack.

On Tuesday, Afghan officials said the woman has an Iranian passport and moved to Afghanistan 10 years ago. There was no suggestion that Iran was involved in the attack on the American.

Officials suspect she may have been recruited by al Qaida or the Taliban, and had intended to also kill Afghan police officials.

UK paper suing Lance Armstrong over libel case

LONDON (AP) ? Lance Armstrong is being sued for more than $1.5 million by a British newspaper over the settlement of a libel action, which followed doping allegations against the cyclist that it published.

The Sunday Times paid Armstrong 300,000 pounds (now about $485,000) in 2006 to settle a case after it reprinted claims from a book in 2004 that he took performance-enhancing drugs.

The U.S. Anti-Doping Agency concluded this year that Armstrong led a massive doping program on his teams. Armstrong was stripped of his seven Tour de France titles and banned from cycling for life.

The Sunday Times announced in an article in its latest edition that it has issued legal papers against Armstrong.

"It is clear that the proceedings were baseless and fraudulent," the paper said in a letter to Armstrong's lawyers. "Your representations that you had never taken performance enhancing drugs were deliberately false."

The paper, which is owned by Rupert Murdoch's News Corp., said its total claim against Armstrong is "likely to exceed" 1 million pounds ($1.6 million).

"The Sunday Times is now demanding a return of the settlement payment plus interest, as well as its costs in defending the case," the paper said.

Jacob Zuma's dominating win at South Africa's ANC, despite criticism, shows politician's skill

JOHANNESBURG - Under the bright lights, the corruption allegations and the ethical concerns trailing South African President Jacob Zuma faded away and the master politician basked in his re-election as head of the governing African National Congress party, singing on stage, smiling and waving to cheering delegates.

Whether he can translate his party victory into reassuring the anxious in South Africa, those worried about the nation's flagging economy, violent criminality and the continued poverty striking those his party once aimed to liberate, however, remains the question.

ANC members voted overwhelmingly Tuesday to keep Zuma as the head of the top political party in South Africa, more than likely guaranteeing the 70-year-old leader another five-year term as the nation's president in the coming 2014 general elections. Opposition parties don't receive the same support as the ANC, the party of anti-apartheid icon Nelson Mandela that many in this nation of 50 million people vote for out of that history.

Zuma trounced Deputy President Kgalema Motlanthe, his only challenger who ran a largely muted and reluctant campaign, getting 2,983 votes to Motlanthe's 991. A smiling Zuma came to the stage immediately after the announcement, waving to the cheering crowd with both hands.

"We can boast that we're a leader of our society, that therefore we have something to contribute to the democratic life of this country, to this democratic Republic of South Africa," Zuma said in brief remarks televised live after his victory. "We are certain that at this course in our democracy we are correct, that what we do at all material times, it is in the interest, not just of our organization, but of our country and its people."

Motlanthe, 63, a former unionist, declined to accept any other post with the ANC at Tuesday's meeting. He embraced Zuma for several seconds after the election results announcement and spoke together on stage in view of delegates.

The ANC must "continue to sharpen its ability to hear the cries of our people," he later told those gathered at the Mangaung conference, held in the city also called Bloemfontein.

In Motlanthe's place, the ANC delegates voted to install wealthy businessman Cyril Ramaphosa as deputy president of the party. Ramaphosa is a former union leader who was the ANC's general secretary during the constitutional negotiations that ended apartheid in 1994. He went on to found an investment empire with interests that include a power plant, McDonald's franchises, a Coca-Cola bottler and mines. In November, Forbes magazine estimated his net worth to be about $675 million.

Ramaphosa has been a leading figure behind the scenes in the ANC, though he shuns interviews and publicly offered no comments on policy or political matters ahead of the vote.

Across the board, all six candidates associated with Zuma swept the voting early Tuesday morning by some 4,000 delegates. That ease served as a stark contrast to the run-up to the conference, which saw disrupted provincial meetings, threats and shootings of local ANC officials.

Police have a tight security presence at the conference, which began Sunday and continues through Friday. Authorities earlier arrested four white men who were charged Tuesday with treason and terrorism offenses over an alleged plot to attack the conference and kill Zuma and other leaders, though it is unclear how far along their planning was.

Zuma was the favorite heading into the conference after winning the nominations in most provincial ANC polls. He has wide support among Zulus, South Africa's largest ethnic group, as well as from a loyal cadre of government and party officials.

But many in the public have grown disenchanted with Zuma, who former President Thabo Mbeki fired as deputy president in 2005 after he was implicated in the corruption conviction of close friend and financial adviser Schabir Shaik over a 1999 arms deal. Newspapers have written numerous articles recently about the millions of dollars of government-paid improvements made to Zuma's private homestead. Zuma has also faced accusations, by the media, of being unable to manage his personal finances and relying on friends and colleagues to bail him out, including, allegedly, Mandela himself.

Zuma has also faced criticism over his sexual activity, having been put on trial on charges of raping a family friend, and acquitted, in 2006. He also once claimed that taking a shower after having sex with an HIV-positive woman would protect him from AIDS, a comment that drew widespread criticism.

He and the ANC also have been criticized for strikes that overtook the nation, particularly in the mining sector, and the handling of violence at the Lonmin platinum mine in Marikana in August where police shot dead 34 strikers. The Lonmin strike sparked labor unrest at other mines. Ramaphosa is a non-executive director at Lonmin, raising questions about how his wide business interests will affect the government.

After the lights fade from Mangaung, however, Zuma will find himself back in the same position he was before. South Africa's economy remains anemic and the continent's top economy has seen credit downgrades. Meanwhile, the same black citizens the ANC promised to liberate find themselves crushed by the same poverty.

Justice reaches settlement with Penguin on e-books

(AP) ? The Justice Department announced Tuesday it has reached a settlement with Penguin Group (USA) Inc. in its lawsuit accusing the nation's largest book publishers of colluding with Apple Inc. to raise e-book prices on customers.

The settlement, if approved by a federal judge, leaves Apple and Holtzbrinck Publishers LLC, which does business as Macmillan, as the only defendants standing against the federal government's charges that Apple, the multimedia and computer giant, conspired with several publishers in the fall of 2009 to force e-book prices several dollars above the $9.99 charged by Amazon.com on its popular Kindle device.

The Justice Department, which sued in April, settled with Hachette Book Group, Inc., HarperCollins Publishers LLC and Simon & Schuster Inc. earlier this year. The trial is scheduled to begin in June.

"The proposed settlement with Penguin will be an important step toward undoing the harm caused by the publishers' anticompetitive conduct and restoring retail price competition so consumers can pay lower prices for Penguin's e-books," said Jamillia Ferris, chief of staff and counsel at the Justice Department's antitrust division.

Apple Inc. has said the government's accusation that it conspired with major book publishers to raise the price of e-books is untrue.

The proposed settlement was filed in federal court in New York.

The settlement had been expected by some industry observers as a means to simplify Penguin's impending merger with Random House, which is not a defendant in the case. That deal would create the world's largest publisher of consumer books.

Under the settlement, Penguin "will be prohibited for two years from entering into new agreements that constrain retailers' ability to offer discounts or other promotions to consumers to encourage the sale of the Penguin's e-books," and must submit to "a strong antitrust compliance program" that includes telling federal officials about any joint e-book ventures or any communications with other publishers, Justice Department officials said.

The Justice Department's lawsuit stems from agreements reached between major publishers and Apple in 2010 that allowed publishers to set their own prices for e-books, an effort to counter Amazon's deep discounts of best sellers. The department and 15 states said Apple and the publishers cost consumers more than $100 million in the past two years by adding $2 or $3, sometimes as much as $5, to the price of each e-book.

E-books are believed to comprise around 25-30 percent of total book sales.

Penguin Books is scheduled to merge with Random House, which is owned by German media company Bertelsmann. The resulting combination will have around a quarter of the market for consumer books. "Should the proposed joint venture proceed to consummation, the terms of Penguin's settlement will apply to it," the department said.

Last week, the European Union's competition watchdog accepted proposals by four publishers and Apple to end agreements that set retail prices for e-books ? a practice the EU feared violated competition rules. The agreement was legally binding on Hachette Livre; Harper Collins; Simon & Schuster; and Verlagsgruppe Georg von Holtzbrinck, which owns Macmillan. That deal was also binding on Penguin.

Domestic Abuse - The Legal Options

Domestic violence is a crime that is estimated to affect tens of thousands of people each year. Many victims, for whatever reason, choose not to report it, so the actual number may be significantly higher. It can be committed by both men and women and they do not necessarily need to live in the same property for it to occur. Domestic abuse may also take the form of financial, verbal or mental abuse and is not just limited to physical violence. Here, we will look at the legal options available if you are affected.

Domestic Abuse is a Crime

Always remember that domestic violence is a crime and you can receive protection under criminal and civil law. If you are on a low income and are receiving benefits, you can apply for public funding to cover some of the legal costs if you need to go through a solicitor.

Domestic Abuse and Criminal Law
Perpetrators of domestic abuse may be charged with several crimes if arrested. These include murder, rape, assault, grievously bodily harm, harassment, criminal damage, actual bodily harm et al.

The Crown Prosecution Service will always prosecute the offender on the victim's behalf if the case reaches the Criminal Court. You may be called as a witness to testify against the defendant and will not need a solicitor in this instance (the offender will have one to help defend him or her in court). Witnesses may be scared against speaking against their relative or ex-partner and the experience might make you feel vulnerable and isolated. Always remember that the law is there to help you.

If the police think you are at high risk of domestic abuse (particularly if the offender has a history of violent behaviour), you might be referred to an Independent Domestic Violence Advocacy (IDVA) service who will guide you through the legal process.

Domestic Abuse and Civil Law
If you are suffering from domestic abuse and do not wish to go through the police for whatever reason, you can seek protection by applying for an injunction (also known as a protection order). Applications are heard at the Magistrates' Family Proceedings Court and you will need to make a sworn statement describing the behaviour of your ex-partner/relative. If you are in significant danger, you can get applications done on the same day.

Who Can Apply?
To apply for an injunction, you and your partner/relative must be related to one another in some way. These include marriage, being in a civil partnership, are co-habiting, have children together and are engaged.

Types of Injunction
The two main types under Part IV of the Family Law Act 1996 are a non-molestation order and an occupation order:

? A non-molestation order is intended to prevent the offender from intimidating you and your children. The Domestic Violence Crime and Victims Act 2004 has made breaching this injunction a criminal offence, giving you extra protection.

? An occupation order restricts who can and cannot live or enter your home. The offender may not be allowed to return to the property if you do not feel safe with him/her living there.

Conclusion
Domestic abuse is a terrifying experience but you are protected under criminal and civil law, enabling you to live your life in safety and harmony. Always consult a legal professional and services like the Citizen's Advice Bureau if you are unsure of any aspect.

Our Form Of Entertainment At The Home DE-Poh - Our Love and ...

A trip to the "Home De-poh" as Jer would call it is what us redneck Cooks would call a good time as a family. ?There's nothing better than a trip to the home improvement store for some lumber, ceiling fan picking-out and a little tractor riding all while our less than 2 year old (at the time) drive around our shopping cart. ?

It's about time this guy start pitching in around here. ?His share of duties for the family: pushing our carts for us. ?And he's pretty dang good at it. ?4 months later and I'd call him a pro. ?He can maneuver, back up and turn corners like a champ. ?I'm more likely to run into people/things than he is. ??

This particular trip was for lumber to make our shelves and ceiling fans for our back patio. ?It was all in preparation for Boston's 2nd birthday party.
When we get tired of entertaining our child with the park.....we bring him here to fake ride the tractors. ?Its cheap and makes his day. ?Win win.
The trick is getting him off them.
Once he got his tractor thrill we headed over to the lumber aisle and let daddy do his thang. ?I would go for the cheap get-er-done lumber but not Jer. ?He wants to the get best most expensive wood. ?You know....the stuff that'll last us more than a year. ?Then he has to carefully go through each one to get the best looking pieces.
After waiting on Jer for what seemed like for-eva we head out with lumber, fans and a few extras in hand. ?Those few extras.....you'll learn about soon. ?;)
Pretty sure I'm going to see this sight of these two for many years to come. ?Swoon.
Seriously, I just did a whole post about us going to Home Depot. ?Is that crazy or what? ?Do you guys ever want to document little family things like this? ?Or am I the only nut around the blogosphere that does this?

E-commerce in Morocco: A growing business with a promising future ...

By Larbi Arbaoui

Morocco World News

Taroudant, December 14, 2012

The e-commerce sector in Morocco has truly boomed in the last two years and has provided an easy alternative for Moroccans to shop, pay their bills and utilize other online services from the comfort of their homes.

According to the FNEM (the National Federation of E -commerce in Morocco), the total amount of transactions carried out online ?e-commerce and distance selling,?-including payment by credit card-reached a turnover of over MAD 504.2million (US $58 million) in 2011. This shows a remarkable growth of 72% in comparison with 2010.

The report added that the number of customers shopping online reached 102,000 by the end of 2011. This is in comparison to a total of 16.3 million internet users, showing a large growth potential for the industry.

The increase of the online commercial transactions is logical with the emergence of many websites dedicated to shopping with increasingly attractive offers over the past few years.

The FNEM cited over 670 active e-commerce websites in Morocco which have completed a total of over 1.29 million online transactions in 2011. This reveals a 230% increase from 2010 and ?an average online transaction of 750 MAD ( US$87).

Established Sept. 5, 2011, The (FNEM) National Federation of E-Commerce in Morocco was created in order to defend the actors of e-commerce, to unite and represent all stakeholders of e-commerce and sales remotely.

E-commerce has existed in Morocco since 2008, the date in which the banks have established a secure payment system by credit card. In 2010, 223,000 transactions were recorded by credit card on the internet.

The ?E-Commerce Awards,? was organized by the National Federation of e-commerce in Morocco in partnership with Expert Events. The awards were held on March 30, 2012 and aimed to promote and reward the best innovations in the field of e-commerce over the past year. The competition is open to any operator of e-commerce, service provider or supplier of services in Morocco.

Oscars Academy honors Pedro Almodovar in London

LONDON (AP) ? Iconoclastic director Pedro Almodovar was hailed by Hollywood on Thursday at an Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences retrospective in London.

The Spanish filmmaker received tributes from colleagues and admirers, including fashion designer Jean-Paul Gaultier, screenwriter Peter Morgan and fellow director Stephen Frears ? who praised Almodovar's "transgressive, inventive" spirit.

Quentin Tarantino, in a video message, said Almodovar was the contemporary director he admired most.

Almodovar is part of a creative generation that emerged after Spain ended decades of dictatorship in the late 1970s. His quirky and sometimes outrageous films helped launch the careers of Penelope Cruz, Antonio Banderas and Javier Bardem.

He found international success with "Women on the Verge of a Nervous Breakdown" in 1988.

Almodovar's 1999 movie "All About My Mother" won the Academy Award for best foreign language film, and he took the best original screenplay Oscar in 2002 for "Talk to Her."

His films ? up to last year's "The Skin I Live In" ? remain a heady mix of comedy, tragedy, melodrama, music and more.

Almodovar said he was honored to receive recognition from Hollywood ? if a bit surprised.

"My way of creating and producing and directing is so different from the big companies," he said. "I represent all the independent filmmakers who deserve recognition.

"For reasons I don't understand, (Hollywood) made an exception for me. Maybe it's because in my films a lot of things happen, and that entertains them."

Iran indicts 18 American officials, ex-officials

TEHRAN, Iran (AP) ? Iran's deputy judiciary chief says the Islamic Republic has issued indictments against 18 unnamed current and former American officials on charges of involvement in "crimes against Iran." His remarks did not indicate that any of the men were present in Iran.

Ebrahim Raisi is quoted by the semiofficial Fars news agency Wednesday as saying that charges against the Americans include involvement in terrorist attacks.

Raisi didn't provide any further details, but Iran has said it plans to complain to the United Nations about alleged U.S. "terror" operations including assassinations of its nuclear scientists.

The Iranian media has hinted that those charged include several American neoconservatives. Tehran last year asked Interpol to help seek the arrest of two former U.S. officials it accuses of supporting assassinations of Iranian officials.

Mall gunman: Personal setbacks, friends' disbelief

Clackamas County Sheriff's Office Sgt. Adam Phillips answers questions at a press conference regarding the 22-year-old gunman who opened fire at an Oregon mall, killing two people before killing himself.

By NBC News staff

The man who shot two people to death and wounded another at an Oregon shopping mall had suffered a series of setbacks in the past year, according to a profile in The Oregonian newspaper.

Jacob Tyler Roberts, 22, had lost his driver's license after a couple of speeding tickets, broken up with his girlfriend, been evicted from his apartment, then quit his job and told friends he was going to Hawaii -- only to apparently miss his flight last weekend, the Oregonian said.

Roberts was identified Wednesday as the man who opened fire in the food court of the crowded Clackamas Town Center southeast of Portland. Steven Mathew Forsyth, 45, of West Linn and?Cindy Ann Yuille, 54, of Portland were killed. Forsyth owned a business at the mall.?Kristina Shevchenko, 15, of Portland, was wounded and was in serious condition Wednesday.

Police said Wednesday that Roberts did not have a criminal history but that he stole the AR-15 rifle that he used in the shooting. Roberts killed himself at the mall.

According to the Oregonian, a friend of Roberts' stepfather said Roberts had planned to enter the Navy after graduating from Oregon City High School in 2008 but was prevented because of an injury.

"After that, everything kind of fell apart for him," Rosalie DeDore told the newspaper.

Oregon mall gunman ID'd; motive unclear

Roberts had worked at a sandwich shop for at least six months but quit in November, telling co-workers that he had inherited money and planned to travel to Hawaii and perhaps move there. An acquaintance told the Oregonian that Roberts was supposed to fly there last Friday or Saturday but missed his flight.

People who knew Roberts said it was hard to believe that he could have been a killer.

"It's a very difficult thing to wrap my head around," Benjamin Eshbach, who said he played chess with Roberts and went out with him, told the newspaper. He said Roberts was fun and light-hearted.

"It's hard to imagine him being any other way. Something doesn't fit."

In recent months, Roberts had moved into the basement of a small home in southeast Portland with two roommates, according to neighbors who told NBC station KGW that he seemed like a nice young man.

On Wednesday, Roberts' aunt?provided a hand-written note?through a friend to reporters?apologizing for her son's behavior. KATU of Portland reported that family friends said Tami Roberts is Roberts' aunt but raised him. She wrote that she?had "no understanding or explanation for her son's behavior" and adding she was "very sad and wants everyone to know that she is so sorry what Jake did, it's so out of his character."

Epigenetics may underlie homosexuality, study finds

Dec. 11, 2012 ? Is homosexuality genetic? It's a long-running debate.

Now researchers at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville, say they've found a clue that may unlock the mystery. It lies in something called epi-genetics -- how gene expression is regulated by temporary switches.

A working group at the National Institute for Mathematical and Biological Synthesis (NIMBioS), based at UT, used mathematical modeling that found the transmission of sex-specific epi-marks may signal homosexuality.

According to the study, published online today in The Quarterly Review of Biology, sex-specific epi-marks, which are "erased" and thus normally do not pass between generations, can lead to homosexuality when they escape erasure and are transmitted from father to daughter or mother to son.

"Previous studies have shown that homosexuality runs in families, leading most researchers to presume a genetic underpinning of sexual preference," said Sergey Gavrilets, paper co-author, joint professor of math and ecology and evolutionary biology and NIMBioS's associate director for scientific activities. "However, no major gene for homosexuality has been found despite numerous studies searching for a genetic connection."

Epi-marks may be the trigger they've been searching for.

Epi-marks constitute an extra layer of information attached to our genes' backbones that regulates their expression. While genes hold the instructions, epi-marks direct how those instructions are carried out. They are usually produced anew each generation, but recent evidence demonstrates that they sometimes carry over between generations.

Sex-specific epi-marks produced in early fetal development protect each sex from the substantial natural variation in testosterone that occurs during later fetal development. Different epi-marks protect different sex-specific traits from being masculinized or feminized.

The researchers found homosexuality can occur in opposite-sex offspring when the sex-specific epi-marks are carried on to another generation.

"We discovered when these epi-marks are transmitted across generations from fathers to daughters or mothers to sons, they may cause reversed effects, such as the feminization of some traits in sons, such as sexual preference, and similarly a partial masculinization of daughters," said Gavrilets.

In their study, the researchers integrated evolutionary theory with recent advances in the molecular regulation of gene expression and androgen-dependent sexual development to produce a biological and mathematical model that delineates the role of epigenetics in homosexuality.

"The study solves the evolutionary riddle of homosexuality, finding that 'sexually antagonistic' epi-marks, which normally protect parents from natural variation in sex hormone levels during fetal development, sometimes carry over across generations and cause homosexuality in opposite-sex offspring," said Gavrilets.

The mathematical modeling demonstrates that gene coding for these epi-marks can easily spread in the population because they always increase the fitness of the parent but only rarely escape erasure and reduce fitness in offspring.

"Transmission of sexually antagonistic epi-marks between generations is the most plausible evolutionary mechanism of the phenomenon of human homosexuality," said Gavrilets.
